Error description
The customer notices network problems when they boot from the harddrive, but when they PXE boot everything is fine. The did a little digging and found the no_cable_magic option is being used on the disknetboot image (stage4.sh) and it's not being used on the base images.
Local fix
reload natsemi network module with no_cable_magic=1 option.
Problem summary
Network problems are sometimes seen when using the natsemi network card on a POS terminal that booted from the hard disk, especially if using long ethernet cables. Adding "no_cable_magic=1" to the kernel command line is the fix for this issue, but it's not obvious as how to do this.
Problem conclusion
POS terminals that pxe boot use Novell's disknetboot image, which is already equipped with the "no_cable_magic" workaround, but the final image that is placed on the POS terminals hard disk is missing this kernel parameter. Novell explains how to build client images with this kernel option in the following TID: http://www.novell.com/support/php/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docTyp e=kc&externalId=7000674
