Rational Support Policy Addendum for VMware support with Rational Testing Tools

Preventive Service Planning

Abstract

What is the support policy for IBM Rational Testing tools running on VMware images. The IBM Rational Testing tools, IBM Rational Functional Tester, IBM Rational Performance Tester, have additional considerations and restrictions when you run these tools in a VMWare environment.

About VMware

VMware is a third-party software product that provides a hypervisor environment.

This environment enables multiple Intel operating systems (for example, Microsoft Windows and Linux) to execute concurrently on the same physical (Intel/x86 based) computer.

VMware itself is transparent to the "guest" operating systems and the applications or middleware which operate above those operating systems.

Review the Official IBM Software Group policy for support of VMware.

Below is an addendum to the official policy that outlines the support specific questions around the IBM Rational Testing Tools.

IBM Rational Test Products support running in a VMware Environment

Software support services for Rational Testing products in a VMware (virtualization) environment
This technote outlines the technical-support policy for Rational Functional Tester, Rational Performance Tester that run on VMware images, such as VMware ESX Server or VMware Server.

IBM's Rational Technical Support policy statement for VMware environments:
If you submit a service request, and you are running in a VMware ESX Server or VMware Server environment, IBM Rational Support makes commercially reasonable efforts to resolve the problem. Support assumes that the problem is common to both native and virtual operating environments. Support requires you to recreate the problem in a native environment if they see an indication that the problem is unique to the virtual environment.

Partitioning of hardware into multiple virtual servers could have a dramatic affect on performance. Moreover, software virtualization resource availability for Rational test products is unpredictable. IBM Rational can make no guarantees with respect to performance or scalability in a virtualized environment.

If IBM suspects that a problem is the result of the virtualization technology, you must recreate the problem in a native environment. That determination then guide subsequent ownership of the problem. Rational support does not support or assistance with setting up and configuring Virtual Environments.

*Restrictions
Environments that support shared multi-user, or provide virtual machines, are not recommended for usage in a high-volume scalable performance test. Accuracy of measurements can be impacted in these environments.
    Performance Test Agent
This limitation is most critical for the Performance Test Agent component of the product which is generating load or monitoring an application server thru DCI.
