Feature and patches required when extending an existing Eclipse 3.4.2 IDE with Rational Software products

Troubleshooting

Problem

There are patches that must be added to your existing Eclipse 3.4.2 IDE before you can extend it with Rational Software products. Failure to add the feature and patches will lead to the inability to start the product and to extend an existing Eclipse IDE.

Symptom

After upgrading to version 7.5.1, 7.5.2, 7.5.3, or 7.5.4, the product will not start if you have not added the required Equinox Bundles feature to your existing Eclipse instance. It may start if this is your initial install but when you apply future upgrades to the product, the product will not start if you have not applied the patches to the product.

Cause

One of the ways Eclipse determines where the base Eclipse install is located is by looking for a plug-in called: org.eclipse.equinox.launcher. If this plug-in exists in the Rational plug-ins location in addition to the base Eclipse install location, your product will not start since Eclipse thinks the base of your Eclipse is now the directory where the Rational plug-ins are installed.

Environment

This issue might occur with the following products:

For Eclipse 3.4.2:

  • IBM Rational Software Architect for WebSphere Software 7.5, 7.5.1, 7.5.2, 7.5.3, 7.5.4, and 7.5.5
  • IBM Rational Software Architect Standard Edition 7.5, 7.5.1, 7.5.2 7.5.3, 7.5.4, and 7.5.5
  • IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software 7.5, 7.5.1, 7.5.2, 7.5.3, 7.5.4, and 7.5.5
  • IBM Rational Software Modeler 7.5, 7.5.1, 7.5.2, 7.5.3, 7.5.4, and 7.5.5
  • IBM Rational Software Architect RealTime Edition 7.5.2, 7.5.3, 7.5.4, and 7.5.5
  • IBM Rational Functional Test 8.1, 8.1.0.1 and 8.1.0.2
  • IBM Rational Performance Tester 8.1, 8.1.0.1 and 8.1.0.2

The following versions of the Rational Software products can be installed into the Eclipse 3.4.1 IDE but there is currently no supported path to upgrade to version 7.5.2, or lalter, because it requires the Eclipse 3.4.2 shell.

For Eclipse 3.4.1:

  • IBM Rational Software Architect for WebSphere Software 7.5 and 7.5.1
  • IBM Rational Software Architect Standard Edition 7.5 and 7.5.1
  • IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software 7.5 and 7.5.1
  • IBM Rational Software Modeler 7.5 and 7.5.1

Diagnosing The Problem

There are two ways in which problems will manifest.

  • The first is if you try to extend an existing Eclipse IDE without applying the attached patches.
In this case, IBM Installation Manager will block the installation of the product.
  • The second is if you have already extended Eclipse with a 7.5 Rational Software product, applied the patches required for 7.5.1 but have failed to add the feature Equinox Bundles and then proceed to upgrade to 7.5.1. In this case, your product will not start.

Resolving The Problem

The proper way to ensure a successful installation of a Rational product on top of Eclipse 3.4.2 is to follow the instructions in the devWorks article Install into an Existing Eclipse instance.
