Lotus Workflow WebViewer Implementation for iSeries (AS/400) and zSeries (S/390)

 Technote (FAQ)

Question
Is the Lotus Workflow (LWF) WebViewer supported on the AS/400 (iSeries) or S/390 (zSeries) platforms?

Answer
The Java engine of a Web server uses the graphics engine of the computer it runs on to render JPEG images. The Lotus Workflow WebViewer displays JPEG images - what the WebViewer shows as a process. Therefore, if the Web server computer does not have a full-function graphics subsystem, such as an SVGA or XGA card, then the Web server will not create the images that WebViewer would display. An AS/400 or S/390 typically has only a text-only display. So at this time AS/400 and S/390 are unsupported platforms for WebViewer. The Release Notes for LWF 3.0 contain the following statement which implies this lack of support:
Issue: Web Viewer must be installed on a server set for at least 256 colors.
Workaround: None. [KBIU4XUS5V]

There is a free IBM package called "Remote AWT." It can be set up between an AS/400 or S/390 machine and a second machine that does have a graphics card. Then Java classes on the AS/400 or S/390 turn over graphics responsibilities to the second machine via TCP/IP. This then allows the Lotus Workflow Web Viewer to display images.

For iSeries Version 5, Release 3, NAWT replaces RAWT. Refer to technote #1210963 for instructions on using the Web Viewer with NAWT.

Setup Instructions for Remote AWT

To set up the Remote AWT on iSeries follow the instructions below.

OS/400 Server Instructions

1. Install the IBM Developer Kit for Java product on the OS/400. Make sure to choose the JDK 1.1.8 option as required by Domino R5.
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/v5r1/ic2924/index.htm?info/rzaha/setrawt.htm

2. On a Windows system create a file called SystemDefault.properties in Notepad (this file must be in ASCII format). In the file, add the following two lines:

os400.class.path.rawt=1
RmtAwtServer=10.0.0.1 < enter the IP address of the Windows box you are using for remote display

3. On the OS/400, create a directory named /home/qnotes/ and copy the SystemDefault.properties into the directory. The file should be accessible to the QNOTES user profile. To change the owner of the file and directory to QNOTES, you can issue these commands:
  • CHGOWN OBJ('/home/qnotes') NEWOWN(QNOTES)
  • CHGOWN OBJ('/home/qnotes/SystemDefault.properties') NEWOWN(QNOTES)

4. Verify that the QNOTES user profile has its home directory (HOMEDIR) set to /home/qnotes by entering the following command on the command line:

DSPUSRPRF QNOTES

If the directory is not set, change it by using CHGUSRPRF USRPRF(QNOTES) HOMEDIR('/home/qnotes').

4a. Verify that the QNOTES user profile has *RWX Data Authority and *ALL Object Authority to both the /home/qnotes directory and the SystemDefault.properties file.

5. Verify that the Java Servlet Support in the Domino Server document is set to Domino Servlet Manager.

6. Set up and start Remote AWT following the instructions below.

7. Restart the HTTP task on the Domino server.

Remote AWT system setup

(For details, refer to http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/v5r1/ic2924/index.htm?info/rzaha/setrawt.htm)

1. Install JDK 1.1.8 on your remote Windows system.

2. Add <jdk directory>\lib\classes.zip to the CLASSPATH and <jdk directory>\bin to the PATH environment variable.

3. Make the RAWTGui.zip file available to the remote client by following one of the steps below:
  • Copy RAWTGui.zip from the iSeries's /QIBM/ProdData/Java400/jdk118/RAWTGui.zip to the remote system
- or -
  • Map a drive on the remote system to /QIBM/ProData/Java400/jdk118/RAWTGui.zip

4. Start the Remote AWT on the remote system by entering the following command at a DOS prompt:

java -classpath c:\RAWTGui.zip;c:\jdk1.1.8\lib\classes.zip com.ibm.rawt.server.RAWTPCServer

When it is started, you see a message similar to the following:
    "Welcome to Remote-AWT version RAWT_118..."

5. Once the Remote AWT is running on the remote system, try viewing a job in the Web Viewer.

More information

The information center for the iSeries Servers has a site for information on setting up Remote AWT. For more information on this subject refer to the following Web site:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/v5r1/ic2924/index.htm?info/rzaha/400rawt.htm

The Web Viewer has not been tested with the Remote-AWT on OS/390. If you would like information on setting up Remote-AWT on OS/390, refer to the following Web site:
