Documentation Changes

This section outlines major errors in the product's published documentation. 5. 13/05/23 - Summary of changes for UK94428 Bug fix: BKRREST XEDIT - For the CMS file restore dialogue, if the CMS file mode number field is blank a value of '*' will be assumed. Bug fix: Affects SUBMIT, RESTART and REVIEW processing. The REXX default of "NUMERIC DIGITS 9" is insufficient for processing very large EDEV MDISKs, resulting in a warning message during SUBMIT, REVIEW, or RESTART processing: yyyymmdd hh:mn:ss Bad start value nnnnnnnnnn for <userid> <dev> passed by VMUDQ The REXX embedded default is reset to NUMERIC DIGITS 15. Usability: BKRCATLG console processing of the CMS command is now consistent with BKRBKUP and BKRWRKnn; all CMS commands entered via the console interface are folded to upper case. 4. 12/12/05 - Summary of changes for UK83944 Bug fix: If the first minidisk in a backup-to-TAPE job is in CMS EDF format, and contains no files, backup processing tape state information was not correctly updated and the affected backup job fails. This PTF resolves handling of first-in-set "formatted but empty" CMS minidisks. 3. 12/11/05 - Summary of changes for UK82483 This PTF provides additional bug fixes and updates in support of z/VM 6.2 SSI toleration. Bug fix: Only one occurrence of message 9367I will be displayed in a backup job log. This message is displayed in backup-to-DASD operations when SSI is configured but not active. Bug fix: Resolves a REXX run-time error when processing certain options in the RESTORE dialog panels. Bug fix: The embedded default for GETMDSK "SSINODE" option should be a blank (x"40") instead of an asterisk 2. 12/08/07 - Summary of changes for UK80784 This PTF provides bug fixes and updates to sample materials for z/VM 6.2 SSI toleration. Bug fix: Corrects an error in RESTART processing which caused the saved instance number of a job to be incremented. RESTART should no longer change the stored instance value. Extension: A new job template substitution variable, $$SUBMITTER$$, is now supported. This variable is replaced with the user id which issued a SUBMIT, RESTART or REVIEW command during job template processing Behavior change: Diagnostic messages generated during the INCLUDE / EXCLUDE phase of job template processing are now returned to the virtual RDR of user which issued the SUBMIT, REVIEW or RESTART command as "jobname INCLERR", in addition to being reported as part of the MSGNOH responses issued during job template processing. Bug fix: When executing in an SSI cluster member, the minidisk extent information for IDENTITY users could sometimes be inconsistent with the minidisk being backed up. DUMPEDF, DUMPCKD and DUMPFDA have been updated to rely exclusively on CP DIAG 00E4 to extract extent information for minidisks being backed up. Prior to this change, DIAG 00E4 was used only in limited circumstances such as handling of DEVNO minidisk definitions. This change requires all worker service virtual machines (BKRWRKnn) to have an OPTION DEVMAINT statement added to their CP directory entry if the customer installation has not already done so. OPTION DEVMAINT was previously required only if an installation chose to use the RDEVVOL or RDEVICE operands of job template INCLUDE, EXCLUDE and SELECT statements. Example: Updated CP directory entry for BKRWRK01: USER BKRWRK01 xxxxx 128M 512M ABG * 5697-J06 - BKRWRK01 - Worker Task SVM 01 ACCOUNT xxxxx MACHINE ESA IPL CMS OPTION LNKNOPAS DEVMAINT CONSOLE 01F 3215 T OPMGRM1 SPOOL 00C 2540 READER A SPOOL 00D 2540 PUNCH A SPOOL 00E 1403 A * MDISK 0191 3390 start size volser MR readpass writpass multpass LINK 5697J06B 198 198 RR LINK 5697J06B 199 199 MR LINK 5697J06B 591 591 RR * LINK MAINT 190 190 RR LINK MAINT 193 193 RR LINK MAINT 19D 19D RR LINK MAINT 19E 19E RR Behavior change: All service virtual machines (BKRBKUP, BKRCATLG and BKRWRKnn) now attempt to determine whether or not SSI clustering support is available, and will display the SSI configuration status if that information is available. This process relies on the CP QUERY DIAGNOSE command to determine whether or not DIAG 02CC is present on the system. CP directory entries for BKRCATLG and BKRWRKnn must be updated to add CP privilege class E in order to enable use of CP QUERY DIAGNOSE, and in order to invoke CP DIAG 02CC to obtain SSI configuration status information. New messages 9361 through 9367 have been added as part of this change. Example: Updated CP directory entry for BKRCATLG: USER BKRCATLG xxxxx 128M 512M BEG * 5697-J06 - BKRCATLG - Catalog Server ACCOUNT xxxxx MACHINE ESA IPL CMS OPTION LNKNOPAS CONSOLE 01F 3215 T OPMGRM1 SPOOL 00C 2540 READER A SPOOL 00D 2540 PUNCH A SPOOL 00E 1403 A * MDISK 0191 3390 start size volser MR LINK 5697J06B 198 198 RR LINK 5697J06B 199 199 RR LINK 5697J06B 591 591 RR * LINK MAINT 190 190 RR LINK MAINT 193 193 RR LINK MAINT 19D 19D RR LINK MAINT 19E 19E RR Bug fix: Spelling / text truncation errors in the following messages have been corrected: 9263, 9264, 9265, 9268, 9271, 9272, 9273, 9275, 9276, 9277 and 9279. Bug fix: The algorithm to generate the CMS FILENAME / FILETYPE used to store DISKPOOL backup data has been modified to accommodate sharing of DISKPOOL media among SSI cluster members. The SSI member slot number is now taken into consideration as part of the file id generation process. Installation Requirements: Please review the current Program Directory and PLANINFO information regarding updated size requirements for the following product installation minidisks (or SFS directories): 5697J06B 491 (VMSYS:5697J06B.BKUPMGR.TESTRUNTIME) -- Increased to 7 cylinders of 3390 DASD (1260 4K blocks) 5697J06B 591 (VMSYS:5697J06B.BKUPMGR.RUNTIME) -- Increased to 7 cylinders of 3390 DASD (1260 4K blocks) 1. 12/01/20 - Summary of changes for UK75998 This PTF provides bug fixes and updates to sample code. Bug fix: Corrects an error in tape mount processing which could trigger message BKRTIO8180E during EOV processing. Bug fix: Corrects an error affecting backup jobs created from templates which use INCLUDE RDEVVOL statements. Objects selected for backup via INCLUDE RDEVVOL were skipped during backup with message BKRRVB9303W displayed. Bug fix: When end-user catalog browsing tools (BKRJOB, etc) are invoked without a R/W minidisk or directory accessed as file mode "A" , they will now terminate with message 9358E, "Filemode A must be accessed R/W to use this EXEC." Bug fix: End-user catalog browsing tools have been updated to address an inconsistency; panel headers now consistently display "object" instead of sometimes displaying "device" header section of the backup job template. When "CONFIG BKR_Job_DDRTAPE_Verbose = Yes" is specified, DDRTAPE. Bug fix: Sample restore processing routines have been updated to incorporate additional run-time variables for various LOAD routines. Enhancement: Backup jobs which use the DDRTAPE output handler can now declare an additional setting in the header section of the backup job template. When CONFIG BKR_Job_DDRTAPE_Verbose = Yes is specified, DDRTAPE backup jobs will issue message 9359I at start-of-backup for each minidisk. Message 9359I displays the beginning tape position for the minidisk image: BKRRVB9359I DDR-format backup of <userid> <devno> starts on volume <volser>, file <offset>, block ID <block ID>. Behavior change: Service virtual machine console logs now display output from CP, CMS, SUBMIT, REVIEW and RESTART commands with a prefix of the command which generated the output, instead of prefacing each line with "Output line nnn:". For example, the service machine consol response to CP QUERY USERID is now logged as "CP: userid AT nodename" instead of "Output line 1: userid AT nodename. Automated operations processes which inspect service machine console responses to these commands may need to be revised to accommodate this change. New sample code: A new sample version of customer exit BKREXI03 is being shipped as "ALTEXI03 SAMPEXEC". This version of BKREXI03 honors the settings for reserved workers (for backup or restore jobs) in BKRSYSTEM CONFIG. Workers from the beginning of the worker list are reserved for backups, those from the end of the list for restores. Overlaps are detected and reported but the reserved worker settings will not be overridden even if no workers are available as a result. For each job, idle workers are selected first. If there are not enough idle workers, then busy workers will be selected on "least recently used" basis, i.e., those which have had no work assigned by this exit for the longest interval will be chosen first.

General Information

This section contains general information, i.e. SYSGEN hints/tips. 2. 09/07/24 Issue with newly-initialized VTS volumes. Logical tapes which have never previously had any data written on them are automatically initialized by the VTS on first use (creation of VOL1/HDR1 records). When this happens, that logical tape behaves differently than a real tape would, and differently than a logical tape initialized in other ways (such as by the CMS command TAPE WVOL1). The problem doesn't appear when the tape is read sequentially from beginning of tape, but does when an attempt is made to position past the label with a forward space file channel command (REW, TAPE FSF). In the former case, the VTS acts as though there is a tape mark following the label records, but in the latter, as though there is not. This behavior generally affects any CMS application which accesses logical tapes in a VTS. The problem manifests with Backup and Restore Manager during tape mount processing for newly-initialized volumes provisioned in response to a scratch mount request. The following sequence of messages will appear in the backup job log: *** Positioning tape to file 1... DMSP2C110S Error reading TAP1(181) *** Return code 100 from "TAPE FSF 1 ( 0181"; mount aborted! . Circumvention: re-initialize the affected volume(s) using the CMS TAPE command "TAPE WVOL1 volser". 1. 13/11/12 IBM Support Portal - Comprehensive search for product updates.
