Error description

  • WebSphere's canonical lookup (calling Java
InetAddress#getCanonicalHostName) returns ip address instead of
hostname. This causes the Web request to not be intercepted
    for Spnego Single SignOn.

Following trace entry indicates canonical look up returns ip
    address instead of hostname.

    Example Trace snippet:
    [6/12/13 12:29:06:957 EDT] 00000030 AllServerConf 2
    com.ibm.ws.security.spnego.AllServerConfigs getCanonicalHostname
CanonicalSupport has converted hostname.domain.com to x.x.x.x.

    * reconfiguration does not work, use this *
    *                  custom property.                            *
    ****************************************************************
WebSphere Application Server expects the following Java API:
    java.net.InetAddress
#getCanonicalHostName() to return actual hostname. In case
this API returns string representation of IP address,
the application server is not able to recognize that
the incoming request needs to be evaluated for SPNEGO
    authentication.

Problem conclusion

  • The code is updated to provide a way to skip canonical lookup
    for specified hostname.

---Steps to activate the apar code---
    Set following custom property.
     Global security > Custom properties

    Custom property:
    com.ibm.websphere.security.skip.canonical.lookup
    Value: myhost1.ibm.com|myhost2.ibm.com
    Default value: none

Configure the hostnames using "|" as separator.
The hostnames are for the Application Server to skip
    canonical conversion.
The hostname has to match the hostname in the SPNEGO
    filter (Case sensitive)
