Error description
Currently there's no option to change the location of the FFDC directory for the WebSphere v7.0 customers. Whereas, the v8 customers are able to do so after the fix for the internal defect# 539498. This APAR is created to allow the v7.0 customers to be able to redirect the FFDC logs into a new directory.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V7.0 * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: There is no option to change the * * location of the FFDC folder. * * By default it always writes the logs * * in to LOG_ROOT/ffdc folder. * * FFDC location can be changed, only by * * changing the LOG_ROOT WebSphere * * variable to other location. * * By doing this, the entire log * * location is moved to the new location. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** There is no option to change location of ffdc folder. Always writes into LOG_ROOT folder.
Problem conclusion
The system property to set the location of the FFDC directory is com.ibm.ffdc.log. If the location you specify exists, make sure that it is a directory and not a file. If it does not exist, make sure that you end the string with a \ on windows or a / on nonWindows platforms. Examples: com.ibm.ffdc.log=/tmp/myFFDC/ or com.ibm.ffdc.log=c:\myLogs\myFFDC\. APAR PM79302 requires changes to documentation. NOTE: Periodically, we refresh the documentation on our website; so the changes might have been made before you read this text. To access the latest on-line documentation, go to the product library page at: http://www.ibm.com/software/webservers/appserv/library The following update to the WebSphere Application Server Version 7.0 Information Center will be made available in December 2013. The topic "First failure data capture (FFDC)" will be updated to include the following paragraph: The com.ibm.ffdc.log variable can also be used to redirect the FFDC incidents and summary created in the product. If you want to use the com.ibm.ffdc.log variable for this purpose, you must specify a directory as the variable value. Therefore, it is recommended that, if this variable is used in a WebSphere Application Server environment, the specification of this variable end in a file separator (/ or \\) to avoid conflicts. APAR PM79302 is currently targeted for inclusion in Fix Pack 7.0.0.31 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0.
