Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: IBM WebSphere Application Server V7.0, * * V8.0 and V8.5 users of JAX-WS web services * * applications. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: An object of user defined class cannot * * be * * converted into the destination type of * * byte * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** When a JAX-WS application is running, if the input or output of web service port has MIME type parameter, you will get an exception similar to the following: "javax.xml.ws.WebServiceException: An internal error occurred during JAX-WS marshalling. An object of type com.ibm.sampleClass cannot be converted into the destination type of byte[]". This error is caused by a software issue. If the input is a non-MIME type parameter, but the output is a MIME type parameter, the web services engine will still try to convert the input into an array of byte, and get the exception. The correct behavior is that the web services engine should know the input is not MIME type and will not try to convert it into array of byte.
Problem conclusion
The JAX-WS engine is changed to detect this scenario and handle it correctly. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 7.0.0.29, 8.0.0.6, and 8.5.0.2.
