Error description
When validating an existing connection where the Database server is in a "hung" state - that is, the Database is accepting connections but not processing them in a timely manner, documentation of validateNewConnectionTimeout implies the pool manager should time out, but that does not appear to be happening. The issue can be reproduced by putting a proxy between the application server and database server that has the ability to continue to accept data being sent by the application server, but stop sending responses producing a hung state.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Database server hang renders the * * connection close thread hung while * * destroying connections. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** When the database is hung , the call to close physical connection to database hangs as part of destroying the pool as per connection pool settings. Check to validate if the connection is valid before closing the physical connection needs to be done so that cleanup thread does not hang.
Problem conclusion
The isValid method has a timeout of 2 seconds as this method could be called multiple times as part of destroying the pool and the total time to cleanup the pool may take many seconds. Note : This APAR is not enabled by default and in order to enable the APAR you will have to define a datasource custom property on the respective datasources Navigate to: Resources > JDBC > JDBC providers > JDBC_provider > Data sources > (data_source) > Custom properties Define the following custom property : Property Name : closeValidConnections Value : true Restart the servers for the custom property to take effect. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix packs 8.5.0.2 , 8.0.0.6 and 7.0.0.29.
