APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • The WebSphere administrative console can display incorrect
values for the location of the recovery logs for the
compensation service that do not match the location used by
    the compensation service runtime.

This error occurs when the recoveryLogDirectory attribute
exists in the compensationService element contained in the
server-pme51.xml configuration file for the application server.

Local fix

  • Since the value for the recovery log directory from
server-pme51.xml could be migrated by accident if subsequent
changes are made to the compensation service via the admin
console, the value can be removed from the server-pme51.xml
    file.

This can be done via the admin console,
blanking out the value shown for the compensation service's
recovery log directory field and applying the changes.

Since there is no danger of the runtime using the value from
server-pme51.xml this change is sufficient and that there is no
need to restart the servers. This is a per server process.

    ****************************************************************
The WebSphere administrative console can display incorrect
values for the location of the recovery logs for the
    compensation service.
The configuration of the logs for the compensation service
changed between WebSphere versions 5.1 and 6.0.1. In versions
before 6.0.1 the location of the logs was stored in the
server-pme51.xml file. From version 6.0.1 onwards the runtime
ignores that value, it only uses the recoveryLog entry in the
serverindex.xml file. Having a value set in server-pme51.xml
file will have no effect on the runtime behaviour of
    the service.
The WebSphere Administration console contains logic to
administer back-level application servers in a mixed cell
environment. For administering a pre V6.0.1 application server
the administrative console will read in the
recoveryLogsDirectory from the server-pme51.xml as designed.
However, the adminministrative console will also retrieve
and display a non-default value specified in the
server-pme51.xml file when the application server is at
version 6.0.1 or later even though this value is not used by
    the runtime.
Furthermore if the compensation service values were changed or
reapplied via the administrative console, these values would
be migrated into the serverindex.xml, replacing the values in
use by the runtime. In the case where the values in the
server-pme51.xml did not match the value in use by the runtime
this could cause a loss of compensation service state data when
    the migrated value took effect.

Problem conclusion

  • The WebSphere administrative console was modified so that it
no longer retrieves the recovery log directory for the
compensation service from the server-pme51.xml file when
processing the configuration for an application server
instance running at versions of 6.0.1 and later.

APAR PM68230 is currently targeted for inclusion in WebSphere
Application Server Fix Packs 7.0.0.25, 8.0.0.5, and 8.5.0.1.

Sysroute APAR PM65489 will be used to deliver this fix in
