Error description

  • It is possible for a user to specify JNDI Context SECURITY
property settings in a jndi.properties file. If a user does
this, JNDI lookups end up infinitely recursing. Our initial
context factory detects the property settings and issues a
login. During login procssing, the class,
    com/ibm/WebSphereSecurityImpl/SecurityServerImpl.java,
then gets an initial context to use for a security server
lookup. However, those JNDI security properties are picked up
and sent to the initial context factory, and that in turn
results in a recursive call to login.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Specifying JNDI security context *
    * properties can cause SecurityServer *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
JNDI security context properties can cause SecurityServer
lookups to fall into an infinite loop as the security
properties need to be authenticated. In order to authenticate,
the SecurityServer is needed. Since the current lookup is for
a SecurityServer, and this request is trying to be
authenticated, the logic will recurse into an infinite loop.

Problem conclusion

  • JNDI SecurityServer lookups are unprotected by nature. This
fix introduces a guard against checking security context
properties during a SecurityServer lookup such that an
    infinite loop will be avoided.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix pack 7.0.0.31, and 8.0.0.1. Please refer to the
