Error description

  • When realm value in security.xml is set to empty string - "", it
    may get set to some default value when updates are done in the
    admin console's security section. The admin console changes may
    not be related to realm setting, but do trigger an update to
    security.xml file.
    WebSphere Application Server should not be writing the realm
    name to the xml file when running on z/OS using Local OS and
    it's not a domain.

    *                  Server V7.0 and 8.0                         *

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Blank realm name being filled in by *

    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    A user on Z/OS using local OS registry may want to keep the
    global realm name blank in security.xml. After 6.1 a change was
    made which prevented this from happening. It was found that just
    by going to Global Security panel and hitting "apply" or "save"
    even without making any changes, WebSphere would fill in the
    blank realm name in security.xml with a default value.

Problem conclusion

  • Change was made to code which will allow a customer to keep a
    blank realm in their global security registry configuration
    provided that they are on Z/OS, using local OS registry as
    global (admin) registry.

    APAR PM37315 is currently targeted for inclusion in
    Service Levels, 7.0.0.21 and 8.0.0.2 of WebSphere
    Application Server.
