Error description

  • When using thin client to lookup Java Mail resources, you might
    get ClassCastException
    java.lang.ClassCastException: javax.naming.Reference
    incompatible with javax.mail.Session

    even after copying com.ibm.jaxws.thinclient_7.0.0.jar and
    com.ibm.ws.admin.client_7.0.0.jar to the classpath of the client
    application.

Local fix

  • copying the com.ibm.ws.mail.jar to client classpath

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: ClassCastException is thrown when *
    *                      attempting to retrieve a JavaMail       *
    * Session from JNDI using the *
    *                      administrative thin client.             *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    A refactoring of JavaMail support occurred between v6.1 and v7.
    Support for JNDI lookups of a JavaMail Session from
    a remote administrative client was impacted. When doing a
    lookup, a class cast exception will occur:
    "Javax.naming.reference incompatible with javax.mail.session".

Problem conclusion

  • Included support for JNDI JavaMail Session lookup from
    administrative thin client.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix packs 7.0.0.21. and 8.0.0.2. Please refer to the
