Error description

  • The Eclipse class
    "org.eclipse.emf.ecore.xml.type.util.XMLTypeUtil"
    will see excess memory utilization in a thread local variable
    when XML data containing large character data sections is parsed
    This can lead to threads timing out due to heavy GC to clean up
    the heap consumed by these large ThreadLocal objects, and
    eventually cause Servants to abend with an EC3.

    *                      parsed.  This can lead to threads       *
    *                      timing out due to heavy garbage         *
    *                      collection (GC) and eventually cause    *
    *                      Servants to abend with an EC3.          *

    The problem occurs because the thread local variable
    org.eclipse.emf.ecore.xml.type.util.XMLTypeUtil$CharArrayThreadL
    ocal performs an allocation which is proportional to the size
    of the character data sections (CDATA sections) which are
    processed.  Because of how threads are managed, that leads to
    an effective permanent static allocation.
    

Problem conclusion

  • The problem was resolved by rewriting the XMLTypeUtil code to
    remove unnecessary allocations, including the removal of the
    thread local variable.
    
    APAR PM34450 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service
    Level (Fix Pack) 6.1.0.41 of WebSphere Application Server V6.1,
    and and Service Level (Fix Pack) 8.0.0.1 of WebSphere
    Application Server V8.0.
    
    For WebSphere Application Server V7.0 for z/OS this APAR will
    be documented as being delivered via it sysrouted APAR PM39993.
