Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: IBM HTTP Server users with mod_deflate who *
    * would like the responses to be cacheable *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: mod_deflate alters the Etag header in *
    * the response in a way that is *
    * incompatible with clients using *
    *                      If-None-Match to avoid refetching       *
    *                      unchanged content.                      *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: IBM HTTP Server users with mod_deflate who *
    * would like the responses to be cacheable *
    * should apply this fix. *
    ****************************************************************
    When mod_deflate is used to compress responses from IBM HTTP
    Server, the ETag header value has "-gzip" appended. If
    clients use the If-none-match request header with that value
    on a subsequent request for the same URL, and the content has
    not changed, they should get a 304 response to indicate the
    content has not changed, but instead they get a 200 response
    and the complete content is returned again. See also this

Problem conclusion

  • Ported fix from Apache HTTP Server to not append -gzip to the
    Etag header.

    This fix is targeted for IBM HTTP Server fixpack:
    - 7.0.0.13
