Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Unhelpful error message * * (NullPointerException) when trying to * * start server when plugins directory * * is unreadable. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** The application server process must have read access to the WAS_HOME/plugins directory. If it does not, the application server cannot start. The current bootstrap process does not adequately explain why it cannot start the server and instead prints a NullPointerException in the startServer.log file.
Problem conclusion
This APAR fixes this issue by providing a more clear error message indicating that the reason that the server fails to start is due to the current user having insufficient read permissions to the WAS_HOME/plugins directory. The error message will look like this: WSVR0617E: The plugins directory cannot be accessed The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 7.0.0.13.
