PI50119: MORE ERROR INFO REQUIRED ON WSEC7074E WHEN KEYINFO MISSING FROM SAML ASSERTION

Error description

  • When the KeyInfo element that is required to process the
    signature in a SAML Assertion is missing, a WSEC7074E error
    does not include exception details.
    
    We see the following error:
    
    SAMLResponse could not be
    verified.com.ibm.wsspi.wssecurity.core.SoapSecurityException:
    security.wssecurity.WSEC7074E

    When the digital signature in a SAML Assertion cannot be
    validated because the KeyInfo element is missing from the
    Assertion, the following error is emitted:
    SAMLResponse could not be
    verified.com.ibm.wsspi.wssecurity.core.SoapSecurityException:
    security.wssecurity.WSEC7074E
    This message does not give enough information to determine the
    cause of the error.
    The following entry would be be in the trace.log when using
    the WS-Security trace spec:
    Can not locate KeyInfo to verify SAML signature.
    

Problem conclusion

  • APAR PI38151 updated the SAML run time to emit a more usable
    message when a bad KeyInfo element is present in a SAML
    assertion.  APAR PI38151 did not address the case where the
    KeyInfo is completely missing from the SAML Assertion.
    
    When a key cannot be retrieved to process the digital
    signature in a SAML Assertion and there is no KeyInfo element
    in the Assertion, the following error will be emitted:
    
    CWWSS7074E: The key is not retrieved. The exception is:
    CWSML7004E: The [KeyInfo] element in the Assertion element is
    missing or empty.
    
    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
    fix pack 7.0.0.41, 8.0.0.12 and 8.5.5.9.  Please refer to the
