Error description
The client is experiencing slow application start for an application to which a NAS mount is attached to a .war directory within the installedApplications directory of the application. The NAS mount contains many files. Normal application processing, which obtains a full listing of the files, is excessively delayed because of the large number of files. The system property org.eclipse.jst.j2ee.commonarchivecore.FILTERBINARIES, which has been provided for this scenario, is being set, but is having no effect. The problem is caused by an internal coding problem, in which the API which is used to specify application paths follows a code path which is not coded to use the FILTERBINARIES property.
Local fix
This specific client was able to workaround the issue by "unmounting" the NAS mount and starting the server. Then, the client added the NAS mount.
Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V7.0 who use the FILTERBINARIES * * property * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Slow application start not resolved * * by use of FILTERBINARIES custom * * property. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** This problem is particular to users who have very large file sets which are causing very long application startup times, and who are attempting to use the custom property "org.eclipse.jst.j2ee.commonarchivecore.FILTERBINARIES" to reduce startup times. When FILTERBINARIES is working properly, startup times are reduced in proportion to the number of files which are removed. For this problem, the expected reduction in startup time is not being achieved.
Problem conclusion
The FILTERBINARIES custom property was not used in all code paths which perform file listings during application startup. The problem was resolved by a code change which enables FILTERBINARIES filtering in the missing code path. The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in fix pack 7.0.0.41.
