Error description

  • WebSphere on z/OS native code makes use of Authorized Pause
    service calls, associated with zWAS thread and work element
    structures. The PAUSE calls are made from the module BBO3PSE.
    The code path for freeing pause elements that are no longer
    needed, added after PM11492, only calls ieavdpe for servant
    address spaces.
    Customer observed high usage of SSD block for Pause in ESQA
    associated with controls. Code will be modified to call
    ieavdpe for control processes in addition.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server V8.0 and V8.5                        *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: ESQA storage fills up with SSD blocks *
    * because pause elements are being *
    * allocated but not freed. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    WebSphere Application Server for z/OS Controller does not
    deallocate thread specific pause elements (PE) when the thread
    terminates. The thread specific PEs are the btcb_pet and
    btcb_acrt.acrt_pet.
    For each PE there is a control block in ESQA subpool 239. The
    control block contains an eyecatcher. The eyecatcher is "SSD".
    An example of storage that is leaked:
    E2E2C440   07F7B438  |         SSD .7.. |
    093A3120   00EB9880   02008780   00000000  | ......q...g..... |
    00000000   80000000   00000000   00000000  | ................ |
    LENGTH(X'20')--All bytes contain X'00'

    The PAUSE calls are made from the module BBO3PSE.
