Error description

  • OpenJPA FetchJoin does not always get the correct result. JPA
    query does not map all information. This happens if the data
    returned by database is not sorted by the PK of the main table

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application *
    *                  Server V7.0.0, V8.0.0, V8.5.0, and V8.5.5   *
    * who make use of a JPA query with LEFT *
    *                  FETCH JOINs.                                *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: A query with LEFT FETCH JOIN returns *
    *                      incorrect results.                      *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    Take the following two entities:
    @Entity
    public class DepartmentTest{
    @Id
    private String primaryKey;
    @OrderBy("name")
    @OneToMany(mappedBy = "departmentTest")
    private Set<PersonTest> persons = new HashSet<PersonTest>();
    ...........
    @Entity
    public class PersonTest {
    @Id
    private String primaryKey;
    @ManyToOne
    @ForeignKey
    private DepartmentTest departmentTest;
    private String name;
    .....
    With these entities, take this JPQL:
    "SELECT DISTINCT dept FROM DepartmentTest dept LEFT JOIN FETCH
    dept.persons";
    Depending on the data in the database (the order is
    important), this query can return a results set where some of
    the 'persons' are missing.

Problem conclusion

  • With this fix, code has been added to OpenJPA to ensure LEFT
    FETCH JOINs return the correct values for a collection.

    The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for
    inclusion in Service Levels (Fix Packs) 7.0.0.35, 8.0.0.10,
    8.5.5.3 of WebSphere Application Server versions 7.0.0,
    8.0.0, and 8.5.5.
