PI07168: COMPENSATION SCOPE LOG GROWS STEADILY UNTIL LOGFULLEXCEPTION FOLLOWING XAER

Error description

Compensation Scope log grows until LogFullException.  The
server cannot be started once LogFullException occurs.
Historical ffdc records will record a Compensation Scope
XAResource returning XAER_RMERR to a commit or rollback
request from the transaction manager.

In the event of a transient error condition, such as a
timeout, the Compensation Scope XAResource incorrectly
returned XAER_RMERR in response to a commit or rollback
request.  The correct response should be XAER_RMFAIL.
When the transaction manager receives XAER_RMERR the resource
manager has indicated via this error code that no further work
with this transaction may take place.  As a result the
transaction manager does not retry the commit or rollback and
forgets the resource managers transaction branch.
In this case the Compensation Scope XAResource will remain in
doubt for this transaction and as a result the Compensation
Scope log will grow.

Problem conclusion

This APAR resolves the problem by correcting the return code
in the event of a transient error.  Instead of XAER_RMERR,
XAER_RMFAIL is returned and the transaction manager will retry
the XA operation.  When eventually the retry succeeds, the
Compensation Scope log entry will be deleted and indefinite
growth avoided.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix pack 7.0.0.33, 8.0.0.9 and 8.5.5.3.  Please refer to the
