Changes for i5/OS V6.1

 Technote (FAQ)

Question
What is new for IBM® WebSphere® Application Server in i5/OS® V6.1?

Answer
The changes and new support for WebSphere Application Server in i5/OS V6.1 are summarized below:

Installing WebSphere Application Server on i5/OS V6.1

WebSphere Application Server version 5.1 is not supported on i5/OS® V6.1 and is not operational on i5/OS V6.1. Customers currently using Application Server V5.1 and upgrading to V6.1 should migrate to Application Server version 6.0 or Application Server version 6.1. Since migration does not require Application Server V5.1 to be operational, migration can occur before or after upgrading to V6.1. Information about migration is found in the Application Server V6.0 and Application Server V6.1 information centers at WebSphere Application Server for System i.

Installing Application Server V6.0 or V6.1 on V6.1 requires a refreshed installation version of the product. The refreshed installation version of Application Server V6.0 is based on level 6.0.2.23. The refreshed installation version of Application Server V6.1 is based on level 6.1.0.11.

For the refreshed installation version of Application Server V6.0, the electronic download image Part Numbers in Passport Advantage® were updated on 2/08/2008 and are available as follows:
  • Network Deployment: CR2J9ML
  • BASE: CR2JAML
  • Developer's : CR2J8ML
  • Express : CR2J7ML

For the refreshed installation version of Application Server V6.1, the electronic download image Part Numbers in Passport Advantage were updated on 9/28/2007 and are available as follows:
  • Network Deployment: C132LML, C15LNML(Supplements)
  • BASE: C132JML, C15LMML(Supplements)
  • Developer's : C132KML, C15LPML(Supplements)

The refreshed Application Server Express V6.1 media is shipped as the following Feature Codes of IBM® Web Enablement for i5/OS (5722WE2) and is available in the Build to Order Channel:
  • FC 2690 - WebSphere Express V6.1 - CD Refresh
  • FC 2691 - WebSphere Express V6.1 - DVD Refresh

After installing WebSphere Application Server V6.0 or V6.1 on V6.1, apply the most recent Fix Pack for WebSphere Application Server. Instructions for obtaining and installing Fix Packs for V6.0 and V6.1 are found at:

http://www.ibm.com/systems/i/software/websphere/services/service.html

If WebSphere Application Server V6.0 or V6.1 is on the system prior to i5/OS V6.1 being slip installed, then apply the most recent WebSphere Application Server Fix Pack before or after slip installing V6.1, but before starting WebSphere Application Server. Also, if HTTP servers were associated with application servers prior to upgrading to V6.1, manual changes to the LoadModule directives must be made before starting the HTTP servers. For details, see "Plugins and LoadModule directives" in the System i i5/OS Memo to Users Version 6 Release 1 at:

New default JVM™ for Application Server V6.1

The default Java™ Virtual Machine (JVM) has changed for WebSphere Application Server V6.1. This change only affects new installations of Application Server V6.1 on i5/OS V6.1. When product 5761-JV1 option 8 is on your i5/OS V6.1 system prior to installing Application Server V6.1, the IBM J2SE 5.0 32 bit Java virtual machine (JVM) is enabled for the Application Server installation. The i5/OS Java™ Developer Kit 5.0 JVM (also known as the "Classic" JVM) is still the default JVM when Application Server V6.1 is installed on earlier versions of i5/OS.

You may use the enablejvm script to enable Application Server V6.1 for the Classic JVM if product 5761-JV1 option 7 is on your i5/OS V6.1 system. For more information about enablejvm, see enablejvm command

Support for new 64 bit JVM in Application Server V6.1

The IBM J2SE 5.0 64 bit (product 5761-JV1 option 9) is new with i5/OS V6.1 and is supported by Application Server V6.1. If you have 5761-JV1 option 9 installed on your system, you may use the enablejvm script to enable your application server profile to use this JVM. For example, to enable the IBM J2SE 5.0 64 bit JVM for a profile named myProfile, enter the QShell and invoke the following:

install_root/bin/enablejvm -profileName myProfile -jvm std64

where install_root is the root directory of your WebSphere Application Server product installation.

For more information about enablejvm, see enablejvm command.

Tuning the IBM J2SE 5.0 JVM

The JVM may require tuning when the Application Server is enabled for an IBM J2SE 5.0 JVM. The default initial Java heap size and maximum Java heap size are different for an IBM J2SE 5.0 JVM than for Classic. When Application Server V6.1 is enabled for either the IBM J2SE 5.0 32 bit or IBM J2SE 5.0 64 bit JVM, the default initial and maximum heap sizes are 50 MB and 256 MB, respectively. For Classic, the default initial and maximum heap sizes are 96 MB and 0 MB (0 indicates that there is no maximum value). So, while no tuning may be necessary to run your applications using the Classic JVM, tuning may be required when using IBM J2SE 5.0.

You can use the administrative console to configure the heap size for your application server. To use the administrative console to configure the heap size:
  1. In the administrative console, click Servers > Application Servers > server.
  2. Under Server Infrastructure, click Java and Process Management > Process Definition > Java Virtual Machine.
  3. Specify a new value in either the Initial heap size or the Maximum heap size field. You can also specify values for both fields if you need to adjust both settings. Click Apply or OK.
  4. Save your changes to the master configuration.
  5. Stop and restart the application server.

For information about tuning the heap size, see the How to do heap sizing article in the IBM Developer Kit and Runtime Environment, Java2 Technology Edition, Version 5.0 Diagnostics Guide, that is available on the developerWorks Web site.
