Backing up IBM Installation Manager agent data and shared files for Disaster Recovery

News

Abstract

When you use WebSphere Process Server V7 within your environment, back up the IBM Installation Manager agent data and shared files as part of your Disaster Recovery plan.

Content

WebSphere Process Server V7 is now installed and maintained through IBM Installation Manager, which saves information on installed products in the agent data store and shared files. The damage or loss of shared files or IBM Installation Manager agent data can prevent Installation Manager from working within your environment.

Without agent data files, you cannot make any changes to already installed products or to manage products and their components that have been installed with IBM Installation Manager. For example, you cannot modify, update or uninstall the products. Therefore, as part of your Disaster Recovery plan, you need to have regular backups for the IBM Installation Manager agent data and shared files.

When WebSphere Process Server is installed, the following steps occur:

  1. WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V7 is silently installed by the Launchpad.
  2. If IBM Installation Manager is not already installed, it is silently installed by the Launchpad.
  3. WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V7 is silently imported by the Launchpad into the Installation Manager repository.
  4. WebSphere Process Server V7 is installed by IBM Installation Manager on top of the WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V7 that is registered in the previous step. The WebSphere Application Server Feature Pack for SCA and WebSphere Application Server Feature Pack for XML are installed as prerequisites of WebSphere Process Server V7.

To include the files in your backup, the following table lists the default location of the information that is saved in the shared folders.
Operating system Administrator installationNonadministrator installation
AIX/usr/IBM/BPMShared <HOME>/IBM/BPMShared
Linux/opt/IBM/BPMShared <HOME>/IBM/BPMShared
HP-UX/opt/IBM/BPMShared <HOME>/IBM/BPMShared
Solaris/opt/IBM/BPMShared <HOME>/IBM/BPMShared
Windows<ProgramFiles>\IBM\BPMShared <APPDATA>\IBM\BPMShared

You can use the following command from the IBM Installation Manager to find the location of your shared directory:

<IM_Installation_Root>/eclipse/tool/imcl listInstallationDirectories -verbose

For detailed information on how to change the shared resources location, see Change the default shared resource location for Installation Manager.

The following table lists the default location of the agent data in the IBM Installation Manager.

Operating system Administrator installation Nonadministrator installation
Windows 2000 and Windows XP C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\IBM\Installation Manager
Windows Vista and Windows 2008 C:\ProgramData\IBM\Installation Manager C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\IBM\Installation Manager
Linux and UNIX /var/ibm/InstallationManager
/etc/.ibm
<user>/var/ibm/InstallationManager
/etc/.ibm

For detailed information on how to change the IBM Installation Manager agent data location, see Change the IBM Installation Manager agent data location.
