Abstract
WebSphere Application Server stops writing error messages to the SystemErr.log because of an application generated error
Download Description
PI61290 resolves the following problem:
ERROR DESCRIPTION:
An application generating an error that is not in xml format
can cause SimpleXMLParser in VersionInfo.java to fail. Thus log
entries are no longer written to the SystemErr.log.
LOCAL FIX:
None
PROBLEM SUMMARY
USERS AFFECTED:
All users of IBM WebSphere Application
Server V7.0
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
WebSphere Application Server stops
writing error messages to the
SystemErr.log because of an
application generated error
RECOMMENDATION:
None
Whenever an application generates an error message,
versionInfo is called to log the error message in
SystemErr.log. While logging the error message VersionInfo
needs to call an XML parser to parse a xml file. To avoid
logging the parser's output messages in the SystemError.log,
VersionInfo sets the JVM System Error to a temporary file
instead of the default JVM System Error. The problem is that
VersionInfo fails to restore the default JVM System Error if
the parser generates an exception.
PROBLEM CONCLUSION:
The fix is to add try and finally codes to restore the JVM
System Error in any case.
The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix pack 7.0.0.43. Please refer to the Recommended Updates
