Cached client does not load with Sun Java 6.0 update 15 and update 16

Abstract
When upgrading to Sun Java 6.0 update 15 and update 16, the IBM WebSphere Host On-Demand cached client and download no longer loads in any browser. The Host On-Demand cached client stops loading even if the client is already installed on the client machine. The problem produces an exception in the java console: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError. The download client might also fail to load.

The next generation plugin provides a new way of executing applets with architectural similarities to Java Web Start technology, but with browser integration. Applets no longer execute in a Java Virtual Machine inside the web browser. Instead, a separate Java Virtual Machine process is launched to execute applets. Currently, the Host On-Demand Cached client does not use the Webstart architecture to execute applets. We believe this is the reason the Host On-Demand clients fail with the next-generation plug-in enabled. The Host On-Demand download client also fails with a different java exception.
This is an issue with the Sun Java and not a bug in Host On-Demand.
As a work around, the Next-generation plug-in can be disabled in the Java control panel.
Open the Java control panel.
Select the Advanced tab.
Select Java plug-in.
Uncheck 'Enable the next-generation Java plug-in'.
