**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of z/VM using the IBM TotalStorage * * DS8000 ( D/T2107 ) subsystem. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: APPLY PTF * **************************************************************** This APAR provides support for the IBM TotalStorage DS8000 ( D/T2107 ) subsystem for z/VM V4R4 and Z/VM V5R1 in 3990 mode. The IBM TotalStorage DS8000 is designed to provide unmatched functionality, flexibility, and performance for enterprise disk storage. The DS8000 enables the creation of multiple storage LPARs (logical partitions). These storage LPARS can be used for completely separate production or test environments in a single physical DS8000. This may enable the purchase of one storage server where more than one may have been needed in the past. The DS8000 also provides up to six times the throughput of an ESS Model 800, which may enable workload consolidation into a single storage subsystem.

Comments
Support for the IBM DS8000 TotalStorage ( D/T2107 ) subsystem is added to z/VM. Specifically, the following was done: - Code was added to support the DS8000 in D/T3990 controller mode. The control unit must be defined in IOCP as a 3990. - Code was added to support the ESS unit check consolidation architecture which consolidates global failover unit checks into one per LSS (instead of one per device). - Code was added to the SET EDEVICE command and EDEVICE configuration file statement processing to allow a new '2107' attribute name to be used for SCSI devices defined on the DS8000. - Code was added to exploit the QDIO chained SBAL architecture within VM's SCSI device driver. This improves performance by drastically increasing the data throughput allowed on a single call to the device driver. - Code was added to support a 3390 model 9 disk defined up to 65520 cylinders in size, with exception of CMS and GCS which will allow access to a 3390 model 9 up to 32767 cylinders. Minidisks greater than 32767 cylinders in size are ineligible for minidisk cache'. - Code was added to support the definition of SCSI FCP disks up to near 1TB (or exactly 2,147,483,640 512-byte blocks) in size. If a disk this size is necessary, it is recommended that it be defined as 1023.9G on the ESS hardware console (i.e. 268,409,241 pages or 2,147,273,928 512-byte blocks). The maximum size for FBA SCSI disks supported for use by CMS or GCS is 381 GB. The file VM63534 MEMO contains the publication hits that go along with this support.
