Using SQL Server with multibyte data collation might cause data divergence in ClearQuest databases

 Flash (Alert)

Abstract
This flash identifies an issue that can occur in IBM Rational ClearQuest when hosted on Microsoft SQL Server. When SQL Server is using a multibyte data collation, such as Japanese collation, data corruption might occur in the ClearQuest databases.

Content
When hosting ClearQuest databases on SQL Server with multibyte data collation, data divergence might occur when performing administration tasks. This corrupts ClearQuest elements, including scripts and multiline text fields. This problem applies to both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005.

The observed symptoms:

  • Data divergence in a multiline fields after moving a user database using ClearQuest Designer or using the installutil command.
  • Data corruption in scripts that might cause validation errors.

This issue was investigated as a defect under APAR PK51555. However, it was determined that this problem is caused by a Microsoft MDAC defect, described in Microsoft article KB945142.

If you utilize this database hosting configuration, it is strongly recommended that you install the hotfix provided by Microsoft. You should install this hotfix on any system where you have ClearQuest installed. This includes systems with ClearQuest Designer installed.

Refer to the KB945142 article for more information on acquiring this hotfix. It is currently available for Windows 2003. Contact Microsoft Support should you require additional information about this hotfix, or if you require a download for a version of Microsoft Windows not offered in the KB article.

 BACKING UP FILES:

Always make new database back-ups of your schema repository and user databases prior to making schema changes and performing database upgrades. Failure to create back-up copies can limit your ability to recover from a an upgrade failure, design change issues or other unforeseen failures.
