Abstract
The limitation in the Tivoli Storage Manager server might incorrectly track the data block ID on an UDO2 optical disc media. As a result, data that was previous written to a UDO2 disc might be overwritten.

Problem Summary:
During a write operation to optical WORM UDO2 media, the Tivoli Storage Manager reports the following error message:
ANR8302E I/O error on drive OPTICAL_DRIVEX (/dev/ropX) with volume XYZ1234 (OP=WRITE, Error Number=XX, CC=401, rc=YY KEY= 08, ASC=92, ASCQ= 00).
The SCSI sense data means: Overwrite Attempted - The drive attempted to write data on the written block.
When this write operation is to an optical Read-Write UDO2 media, the Tivoli Storage Manager reports success. However, the data that was previously written to the disc can be overwritten by the write operation.
Currently, the Tivoli Storage Manager server can handle a maximum capacity of 30 GB (dual-sided) for the optical media, and not the larger media capacity of 60 GB.
This problem applies to optical devices with both Read-Write and WORM medium.
Who is Affected:
All Tivoli Storage Manager Server users of UDO 2 optical disc media.
Recommendation:
Apply the fixing level included in the fix for APAR IT00532 when available. This problem is currently projected to be fixed in levels 6.3.5 and 7.1.1.
Problem Resolution:
With the fix for APAR IT00532, the Tivoli Storage Manager server will not overwrite data on UDO2 media.
CIRCUMVENTION:
If there is about 30 GB or less of data on a UDO2 Read-Write media, mark this volume as READ-ONLY. This disc will be dismounted first before the Tivoli Storage manger server selects a new disc to write data to.
