Tape library hang occurs after TPC probe job

Problem(Abstract)

IBM TS3500 tape libraries with A430 firmware may experience a hang condition after running a probe from Tivoli Storage Productivity Center.

Symptom

The embedded CIMOM with the A430 and higher firmware for the IBM TS3500 is now explicitly marked as not supported by Tivoli Storage Productivity Center due to the hang condition that can occur. In these cases, the IBM TS3500 tape library becomes unusable some hours after running a Tivoli Storage Productivity Center probe against the tape library CIMOM. The web GUI no longer works and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager cannot control the tape library for running tape backups anymore.


Resolving the problem

Avoid running probe jobs from Tivoli Storage Productivity Center against the embedded CIMOM of the IBM TS3500 tape libraries with A430 or higher firmware levels. Supported versions of the proxy CIMOM can still be used.

Any future updates for support will be made to the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center support matrices.
