What is the IBM Rational ClearCase Remote Client (CCRC) Extension and when is it needed?
Cause
There are various forms of ClearCase Remote Clients:
- Rational ClearCase Remote Client
The ClearCase Remote Client is a self-contained application that is not integrated with Eclipse and does not depend on any particular development environment. This may also be referred to as the Rich Client Platform (RCP)
- Rational ClearCase Remote Client for Eclipse
The ClearCase Remote Client for Eclipse, which integrates the ClearCase Remote Client with the Eclipse 3.2 or greater platforms.
- Rational ClearCase Remote Client Extension
The ClearCase Remote Client Extension for Rational Delivery Software Platform products, which installs the ClearCase Remote Client into a Rational product based on the Rational Software Delivery Platform on Eclipse 3.2 or greater.
- Rational ClearCase Remote Client for Microsoft® Visual Studio 2005, 2008, or 2010
The ClearCase Remote Client for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, 2008, or 2010 adds support for ClearCase Web views from within the Visual Studio shell.

What is the Rational ClearCase Remote Client Extension?
The ClearCase Remote Client Extension installs the ClearCase Remote Client into an IBM product based on the Rational Software Delivery Platform (such as Rational Software Architect, Rational Team Concert, or Websphere Integration Developer).
It includes:
- Viewers that provide access to resources loaded into ClearCase views. They also allow you to browse the contents of remote ClearCase repositories. Examples of viewers are the ClearCase Navigator and ClearCase Details view.
- Dialog boxes that implement ClearCase operations such as checkout and checkin
- Wizards that automate tasks such as joining a UCM project and creating ClearCase views
- Toolbars and menus that provide access to the dialog boxes and wizards
When is the Rational ClearCase Remote Client Extension needed?
If you work with any of the IBM IDEs which were installed using IBM Installation Manager, and you are using CCRC 7.1.0.01 or greater, then you install the CCRC Extension to provide IDE support for CCRC.
The CCRC Extension offering currently is not supported for installation in a Rational Software Delivery Platform product that extends open-source Eclipse. In this case, use the Eclipse update manager to install the CCRC IDE feature.
Prior to CCRC 7.1.0.01, you used the Eclipse Update Manager to install CCRC directly in the IDE.
Note: If you do not work with any Rational IDEs (such as Rational Application Developer and Rational Software Architect), there is no need to install the CCRC extension.
How do you install the Rational ClearCase Remote Client Extension?
From ClearCase version 7.1.0.01 the Rational ClearCase Remote Client Extension is installed using the IBM Installation Manager.

The CCRC Extension can be installed silently using an Installation Manager response file. For more information, refer to technote 1406820 Sample response files for IBM Rational ClearCase Remote Client Extension.
Starting with versions 7.1.1.6 and 7.1.2.3, the CCRC Extension offering can be installed into 64-bit applications, such as IBM Rational Application Developer 8.0.3. Older versions can only be installed into 32-bit applications.
How do you upgrade the Rational ClearCase Remote Client Extension?
After you (or your system administrator) have applied a ClearCase Fix Pack to the ClearCase CM Server, you can install the corresponding CCRC extension version into your Rational IDE client. In general, the CM server version needs to be the same as or newer than the CCRC client version.
