Domino for iSeries: Notes/Domino 5.0.12 EMEA Languages

 Technote (FAQ)

Problem
How do I convert a Global English Domino 5.0.12 server to a localized server for one of the European languages?

Solution
For release 5.0.12, the IBM Lotus Domino Server, IBM Lotus Domino Designer and Administrator are available in English. No Domino server language packs will be made available for the EMEA languages (Brazilian Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish).
However, the following language versions of the 5.0.12 Enduser Client will be available for Electronic Software Delivery (ESD) in EMEA between May and July, 2003:
French
German
Italian
Brazilian Portuguese
Spanish
Arabic
Czech
Dutch
Danish
Finnish
Greek
Hebrew
Hungarian
Norwegian
Polish
Iberian Portuguese
Russian
Swedish
Turkish
Slovenian

The language versions of the 5.0.12 end user client serve several purposes. The primary purposes are these:
  • Provides IBM Lotus Notes client users with a fully translated client experience. (Customers who need to run Administrator with a translated UI may choose to run the 5.0.11 Administrator.)
  • You can use some of the content of the client delivery to convert an English 5.0.12 server into a localized 5.0.12 server for one of the following languages: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Finnish, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian and Swedish. A localized server is an English server with translated templates and several other translated files. This provides the end user with an enhanced translated user experience and also prepares the server if you plan to add a localized version of Sametime or QuickPlace to the server.

Note for Sametime and QuickPlace customers: If you plan to install a language pack for Sametime or QuickPlace, it is normally recommended that you use the same language version for your Domino server. If you are only installing Domino for the purpose of running Sametime and QuickPlace and do not require translated Domino interfaces, you do not need to complete all of the steps described below. However, there may be some situations where your Sametime and QuickPlace users will see English interfaces. Important steps that affect the server language environment for Sametime or QuickPlace are highlighted in the instructions below.

  • Provides IBM Lotus Domino Web Access (formerly known as iNotes Web Access) templates in 18 languages (no Arabic or Hebrew). You can copy these translated templates to the Domino 5.0.12 server installation directory to provide translated Domino Web Access support.

The remainder of this document describes the steps necessary to convert an installation of English Domino 5.0.12 for iSeries to one of the following languages: French, German, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Finnish, Danish, Dutch, Norwegian and Swedish.

This process is NOT supported for any other language.

Instructions for Updating Language Servers on iSeries systems

Note If you are installing Domino for the first time on your iSeries system, it is best to complete these instructions AFTER installing the English version of Domino 5.0.12 and BEFORE configuring any Domino servers.

    1. If you have a previous Domino version installed, end all of your Domino servers and back up important Domino server files:

      a. Back up the Notes data directory for each of your Domino servers (for example, /<Dom_server>/DATA). This directory includes all ID files (including the server ID and certifier IDs), LOG.NSF, NAMES.NSF, MAIL.BOX, and any other Public Address Books or Domino Directories located on the server.

      b. Back up the contents of any directories or databases pointed to by links (DIR files) from your data directory.

      c. Back up the NOTES.INI file for the server, if necessary. The default location for this file is the server data directory, so it may already have been backed up in step 1a.

      d. Back up any other Notes databases (NSF files) or Notes templates (NTF files).

    2. Install the English version of Domino 5.0.12 for iSeries. If you are upgrading from a previous Domino release, each of your Domino servers will automatically be updated to English 5.0.12.

DO NOT LAUNCH YOUR DOMINO SERVER AT THIS POINT.

    3. Install your preferred language version of the Notes Client for 5.0.12 on a supported Windows Client. Locate the following files in the Lotus\notes\data directory and unzip them:
      • Dom_xx.zip
      • xx_IWA.zip (only needed for iNotes Web Access)
    4. Copy localized iNotes Web Access Files: If you have users who will access the Domino server with iNotes Web Access, complete this step to provide those users with a translated interface. Files must be copied to both the client workstation and to the iSeries server.

      a. iNotes Web Access Client: Copy the following files from the xx_IWA.zip file to the target client directories as shown in the table below:
Location in xx_IWA.zip fileFiles to copyTarget Client Directory
      Root nstrings.dll

      b. iNotes Web Access Server: Copy the following files from the xx_IWA.zip file to the target server directories as shown in the table below:

Note: You must copy the files to the directories which begin with /QIBM/PRODDATA/LOTUS/NOTES/DATA in addition to the appropriate directory for each configured Domino server. This example assumes that the Domino server data directory is called /<Dom_server>/DATA. (The nstrings.dll and nhtrsxx.dll files do not need to be copied to the server.)

    5. Copy updated language templates to Domino 5.0.12 servers: Copy files from the Dom_xx.zip file (see step 3 for location) to the locations shown in table below :

Note: Sametime and QuickPlace users should at least copy pubnames.ntf to the server directories shown.
      Files to copy from
      Dom_xx.zip file
      Target Server Directories
      admin4.ntf
      discsw50.ntf
      doladmin.ntf

      log.ntf
      mail50.ntf
      mail50ex.ntf
      pernames.ntf
      pubnames.ntf
      resrc50.ntf
      setup.ns
      /QIBM/PRODDATA/LOTUS/NOTES/DATA

Data directory for each configured Domino server.

        For example:

        /<Dom_server>/DATA

    6. (Optional) Copy Notes Help databases to Domino 5.0.12 servers: If you have Notes client users that will access the help databases from the server, you can copy the translated versions from the Notes client you installed in step 3 to the locations shown in the table below:
    Location on Notes client
    Files Target Server Directories
    <Notes_data_dir>\help

      For example:

      c:\Notes\Data\help

    dols_help.nsf
    help5_admin.nsf
    help5_client.nsf
    help5_designer.nsf
    /QIBM/PRODDATA/LOTUS/NOTES/DATA/HELP

HELP subdirectory of each Domino server data directory.

      For example:

      /<Dom_server>/DATA/HELP

      7. (Optional) Copy saved 5.0.11 .NTF files to Domino 5.0.12 servers: If you are upgrading from a language version of Domino 5.0.11, you may decide to copy some of the .NTF files that you backed up in step 1 to the locations shown in the table below. These are localized templates that were not updated for 5.0.12. Many of these templates are rarely used and should not have a significant impact on the end user.

      userreg.ntf
      webadmin.ntf
      /QIBM/PRODDATA/LOTUS/NOTES/DATA

Data directory for each configured Domino server.

        For example:

        /<Dom_server>/DATA

        8. Ensure that each of the files you copied to your iSeries machine in the previous steps has the correct Owner and public Data Authority.

          Owner = QNOTES
Data Authority for *PUBLIC = *EXCLUDE

For example, if the Domino server data directory is /<Dom_server>/DATA:

        • To view the owner and data authority for the admin4.ntf file that you copied to the Domino server data directory, run the following command:

          WRKAUT OBJ('/<Dom_server>/DATA/admin4.ntf')

        • To change the owner of admin4.ntf to QNOTES, run the following command:

          CHGOWN OBJ('/<Dom_server>/DATA/admin4.ntf') NEWOWN(QNOTES)

        • To correct the public data authority for admin4.ntf, run the following command:

          CHGAUT OBJ('/<Dom_server>/DATA/admin4.ntf') USER(*PUBLIC) DTAAUT(*EXCLUDE) OBJAUT(*NONE)

        9. Check the Locale of the QNOTES user profile to ensure it is correct. It may have been set to US English when you installed the English version of Domino 5.0.12.

Note: This step is recommended if you plan to install a language pack for Sametime or QuickPlace.
        • From any OS/400 command line, run the following command:

          WRKUSRPRF QNOTES

        • Select option 5 to display the QNOTES user profile. Page down until the Locale parameter is displayed:

        • If the Locale parameter is US English, you should change it to the correct locale for your system by running the following command:

          CHGUSRPRF QNOTES LOCALE('/qsys.lib/<locale_name>')

Tip: Run the following command to display a list of the available locales:

          WRKLNK '/qsys.lib/*.locale'

        10. If you do not have any Domino servers configured on your iSeries system, you can configure a server now. See Installing and Managing Domino for AS/400 for more information.

If you already have one or more Domino servers configured on your iSeries system, complete these steps for each Domino server:

Note: This step is recommended if you plan to install a language pack for Sametime or QuickPlace.

          a. Start the server.

          b. Normally the design of each of the databases is refreshed by the nightly Design server task. Until the Design task runs, the databases will still appear in English. You can force an immediate database design refresh by running the following command from your Domino server console:

              load design
          c. Open the Domino server document. Select the Internet Protocols-Domino Web Engine tab and verify that the correct language is specified in the Convert Resource Strings to field.

If necessary, update the field to the correct language and then restart the server.

Note: It is not possible to change the entry in this field unless you copied pubnames.ntf to the server (Step 5) and ran the Design server task to update names.nsf (Step 10b).
