Technote (FAQ)

Question

How do you install a plug-in into IBM Lotus Symphony?

Answer

There are two methods that can be used to install a plug-in into Lotus Symphony:

  • Method 1 - File > Application > Install - available for all plug-ins for Lotus Symphony 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2
  • Method 2 - Drag and drop into the Widgets Sidebar panel - available for plug-ins for Symphony 1.3 and 3.0.

Method 1 - File > Application > Install

Step
Action
1
If you have not done so, visit the Lotus Symphony Plug-ins page and download the desired plug-in:

http://symphony.lotus.com/software/lotus/symphony/plugin.nsf/home

In the steps below, the Windows ODF Compatibility Plug-in for IBM Lotus Symphony 1.3 will be used. The name of the downloaded file is com.ibm.productivity.tools.odfpatch.updatesite.win32.zip
2
Start Lotus Symphony.
3
On the menu, select File –> Application –> Install. The Install/Update Wizard will appear:

4
Select the option to Search for new features to install. Click Next.
5
On the Applications Locations screen, click the button to Add Zip/Jar Location.
6
Locate the plug-in file that you downloaded. Select the file and click Open.
7
When prompted with the Edit Local Site dialog box, verify the name of the file you selected in Step 6 and click OK.

8
On the Application Locations screen you should now see the file ODF Compatibility plug-in listed in the Location List. Click Finish.
9
On the Search Results screen, click in the box next to the Forum Support plug-in to select it

10
Click Next.
11
On the Feature License screen, accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.
12
The Installation screen will confirm the feature that will be installed.

Click Finish to complete the installation process.

13
When the installation completes you will be prompted to restart Lotus Symphony. You will need to restart before the plug-in will be available.
14
Depending on the plug-in that you install you may see a new icon on the toolbar or a menu called Add-ins. In the case of the ODF Compatibility Plug-in you will not see any changes to the menu or toolbar.

Method 2 - Drag and Drop

Step
Action
1
Launch Lotus Symphony.
2
Choose File > Preferences and click on Widgets.
3
Select the option to "Show Widget Toolbar and the My Widgets Sidebar panel."

For many of the plug-ins that are available for Symphony 1.3, there is a drag-to-install icon and a URL link. Drag and drop the icon or the link to the My Widgets sidebar panel in Lotus Symphony 1.3.

If this icon is not available, please follow the installation instructions for Method 1 in the section above.
