How to control the saving, displaying, and propagation of IP information for TELNET 3270 clients

Question & Answer

Question

How does one prevent the TCP/IP Information (X'64') Control Vector (CV64) that carries a Telnet 3270 client's IP characteristics from leaving the host? Alternatively (or in addition), how does one control the passing of CV64 information to exits and displays?

Cause

By default VTAM makes TCP/IP information available to:

VTAM will also include TCP/IP information on cross-domain session establishment flows involving TN3270 clients, so that other nodes can make use of this information.

Answer

VTAM provides a start option, IPINFO, that allows you to control the degree to which VTAM externalizes TCP/IP information it receives:

  • The default value is SENDALL, which specifies that all TCP/IP information received is to be saved and externalized without restriction. If externalizing IP addresses is not a security issue for you, then there is no reason for you to override the default value.

  • The value NONE specifies that TCP/IP information should not be saved by VTAM at all. Therefore, VTAM cannot display or provide TCP/IP information to other products, exits, or nodes.

  • The value DISPONLY specifies that TCP/IP information will be saved for VTAM DISPLAY purposes only. The TCP/IP information will not be sent to exits or to CMIP. It will not be available to the USS component for substitution into USS messages and will not be sent to cross-domain hosts.

  • The value SNDLOCAL specifies that TCP/IP information will be saved for VTAM DISPLAY purposes, and, in addition, VTAM will make this TCP/IP information available to the USS component for substitution into USS messages, the Session Management Exit, the Tivoli Monitor Exit, the Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP), the TSO/VTAM exit IKTCASX1 (Error Handling for Non-Supported Terminals), TSO applications using the GTTERM macro, and locally owned applications using the LOGON exit. VTAM will not include TCP/IP information on cross-domain session establishment flows involving TN3270 clients.

You can dynamically change the value of IPINFO using the MODIFY VTAMOPTS command.
