CSSMTP does not allow comments on mail commands

Troubleshooting

Problem

If the CSSMTP user codes comments on SMTP commands such as HELO or Mail From, the commands are rejected by CSSMTP. It would be convenient if CSSMTP permitted the coding of comments on these commands. Is this working as designed? If it is, what is the reason for not permitting the coding of comments on these commands?

Symptom

The following console message is displayed when the spool file contains SMTP commands that do not follow the rules documented in the RFC 2821:

EZD1816I jobname jesjobname / jesjobid ON wrtname COMPLETED
WITH ERRORS. SPOOL FILE  DISPOSITION IS DELETE

Resolving The Problem

This is working as designed. Comments are not permitted on the SMTP commands processed by CSSMTP.

There are two chief reasons for this:

  • Permitting comments would violate the standard RFC 2821 where the SMTP commands and the appropriate number of pararmeters are documented.

  • There would be a significant performance impact if CSSMTP checked all lines for comments. If we were to assume that all the lines in a spool job might contain comments, then this type of function would not be good for performance. Performance would suffer considerably because CSSMTP would have to scan and possibly modify each line. All spool jobs, even ones without comments, would have to be scanned as well, because all the mail is going to one external writer
