Tomcat Got LOGOFF event errors in Event Viewer on ClearQuest Web server

Technote (troubleshooting)

This technote identifies an issue that can occur in IBM® Rational® ClearQuest®. You might see the error "Jakrta - Tomcat error: 997 Got LOGOFF event" in the Microsoft® Windows® Event Viewer logs.

This error appears in the Event Viewer application logs on Windows-based ClearQuest Web servers:

Error: Jakrta - Tomcat error: 997 Got LOGOFF event
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Jakarta - Tomcat ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer.

This error is a side effect that occurs when using the -Xrs flag during the initialization of the Java processes.

By default, Java services receive a CTRL_LOGOFF event from the operating system when the user logs out of Windows. As a result, all Java services would stop and shut down. If this were to occur with the ClearQuest services, it would not be possible to connect to ClearQuest Web unless there was an account constantly logged in.

To prevent this, Sun recommends using the JVM option flag -Xrs. This command is specified on the start-up of a Java process, and prevents the Java processes from terminating when a Windows CTRL_LOGOFF event occurs. ClearQuest Web Server services are configured to use these flags. Without them, the ClearQuest Web would shut down on Windows log out.

Resolving the problem

As a result of this side effect, an error event is generated stating "Got LOGOFF event" for each ClearQuest Web Java service running at the time of the log off or shutdown. This error does not have any direct effect on ClearQuest Web itself, just the error reported in Event Viewer.

If you are having problems with the ClearQuest Web server, refer to technote 1257083, Troubleshooting: ClearQuest Web Server problems for version 7.0.
