APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When accessing a file on a mapped FastConnect share,
Microsoft Excel 2002 incorrectly changes timestamp on file,
and displays a dialog box (when user attempts to save even
an unchanged file) advising the user that the file "may
have been changed by another user since you last saved it."

Local fix

  • Microsoft Knowledge Base artice #Q324491 contains detailed
instructions on disabling timestamp checking in Microsoft
Excel 2002.

Problem summary

  • when using Microsoft Excel 2002 SP3 (& beyond?),
a user will be presented with an unexpected dialog
box when he/she attempts to "save" the file (even
though the file itself has not been changed). the
dialog box advises the user that the file may have
been opened by another user and presents the user with
the choice to either overwrite the file, save a copy,
or cancel.

Problem conclusion

  • revert to keeping track of a file's "saved time" in the
FileInstance (as opposed to the HandleEntry)
