Resetting a HMC-Managed System to a Stand-alone Non-Partitioned Server

Troubleshooting

Problem

How to change from a HMC-managed server to a non-HMC managed stand-alone server.

Resolving The Problem

If an HMC is still available, use the following procedure.

Procedure 1 (HMC is available)
Preparation:

If you plan to switch back to HMC-managed server in the future you may wish to backup profile data and create a system plan to save the original configuration.
1. Shut down all logical partitions.
Shut down all logical partitions (PWRDWNSYS RESTART(*NO) ). Verify all partitions show not activated.
2. IPL/re-IPL to standby. If the server state is operating, power off the server.

Power the server on to standby:

Version 7 and later HMC:
a. In the navigation pane of your HMC, open Systems Management and click Servers.
b. In the work pane, select the managed system, click the Tasks button, and click Operations > Power On.
c. Select the power-on mode of Partition Standby and click OK.
d. Wait until the work pane displays a Standby state for the managed system.

Version 6 HMC:
a. In the contents area of your HMC, right-click the managed system and choose Power On.
b. Select the power-on mode of Partition Standby and click OK.
c. Wait until the contents area displays a Standby state for the managed system.
3. Initialize profile data.

Version 7 and later HMC:
a. In the work pane, select the managed system, click the Tasks button, and click Configuration > Manage Partition Data > Initialize.
b. Click Yes to confirm.

Version 6 HMC:
a. In the contents area, right-click on the managed system, choose Profile Data > Initialize.
b. Click Yes to confirm.
4. Clear partition configuration data.

Version 7 and later HMC:
a. In the navigation pane, click HMC Management.
b. In the work pane, click Open Restricted Shell Terminal.
c. Type the command lpcfgop -m managed_system_name -o clear, where managed_system_name is the name of the managed system as it is displayed in the work pane.
d. Enter 1 to confirm. This step takes several seconds to complete.

Version 6 HMC:
a. On your HMC desktop (outside of any of the displayed windows), right-click Terminal > rshterm. The Restricted shell command line interface displays.
b. Issue the command lpcfgop -m managed_system_name -o clear. In this command, managed_system_name is the name of the managed system as it displays in the content area.
c. Enter 1 to confirm. This step will take several seconds to complete.
5. Set the next PHYP IPL type to Running. This can be done through either the HMC command line or ASMI.

Using the HMC command line:
Issue the command chsyscfg -m tttt-mmm*ssssssss -r sys -i "power_on_option=autostart"

Using ASMI:
a. On the ASMI Welcome pane, log in using the admin user ID (type admin into User ID, enter the admin password into Password, and click Log In).
b. In the navigation area, expand Power/Restart Control and click Power On/Off System.
c. Set Boot to server firmware to Running.
6. Remove the HMC connection.

Version 7 and later HMC:
a. In the work pane, select the managed system, click the Tasks button, and click Connections > Reset or Remove Connection.
b. Select Remove connection and click OK.

Version 6 HMC:
a. In the contents area, right-click on the managed system.
b. From the menu, click Reset or Remove Connection.
c. Select Remove connection and click OK.
7. Power off
Power off using the control panel.
The control panel will show "HMC=" until the next IPL, pinhole reset or AC power cycle however the server will now operate as a stand alone server.

Alternative Procedure 2 (ASMI but no HMC)
Use this procedure if the HMC is no longer available. Access ASMI using a PC web browser, log in as admin and "Restore server to factory settings". For POWER6 and later use the "Reset All Settings" option under "Factory Settings".

Alternative Procedure 3 (no ASMI access, no HMC)
Use this procedure if the HMC is no longer available and there is no way to access ASMI. The least preferable alternative is to clear the NVRAM by removing the FSP battery for 5 minutes and then reinstalling it. For information on accessing the FSP battery on a particular model server, search IBM Hardware Knowledge Center for "time-of-day battery".

B2003110 after removal of HMC
After resetting the server to a stand-alone (non-partitioned), the first IPL may fail with B2003110. See Recovering the vital product data information if the partition does not IPL in A-mode or B-mode
