Error description

  • CPCP session from VTAM to a Windows 2000 Communications Server
fail repetitively. The Windows 2000 Communications server is
setting sense 08900060 for the session. This issue was corrected
in Communications Server for windows with APAR JR16282. However
VTAM should not run out of storage when this problem occurs.
Storage was filled with RUMD control blocks.

    ****************************************************************
The problem can be summarized as follows:
    1. CS/NT or Windows 2000 Communications Server EN set up a CPCP
       session to VTAM.
    2. Netview tried to get management services data from the EN
by sending 3 signals that are represented in VTAM storage
by the ISTRUMDS control block with eyecatcher RUMD.
    3. The EN sent in bad data on the CPCP session that led to the
CPCP session failing almost immediately with sense 08900060
       in message IST1280I.
    4. Timing in sending the management services data to the EN
caused only 2 of the 3 RUMDs to be freed.
    5. The EN repeatedly sets up the CPCP session with RUMD storage
being stranded by some the CPCP session setup/failure flows.

The bad data being sent by the EN was corrected in
Communications Server for windows with APAR JR16282. However
VTAM should not run out of storage when this problem occurs.
This APAR is to address the VTAM storage issue.

The RUMDs could be left stranded during CPCP session
deactivation for other reasons. But, without a large number of
CPCP session deactivations, the amount of storage growth would
    be hard to detect.

Problem conclusion

  • ISTMTRCS has been changed to check the copied TP work queue
for multiple work elements (RUMDs) when it processes a CP Status
signal that indicates the CPCP sessions are inactive.
