Error: 'JVM terminated...' when launching Notes or Productivity Tools by way of shortcut

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem

You install Lotus Notes® 8 on Microsoft® Windows Vista™ as a multi-user installation as an administrator account. When you launch Notes 8 or the Lotus Productivity Tools® using the desktop shortcut, the application crashes with the following error message:

    "JVM terminated. Exit code=8096
    Enabling com.ibm.productivity.tools.feature"
The crash occurs whether or not you are logged into Windows as an administrator or as a regular user. This issue is not reproducible on Windows XP.

To reproduce.

1. Modify the deploy\install.xml file as follows:

    <installfeature default="false" id="Editors" name="IBM Productivity Tools" required="false" show="true" shared="false" version="8.0.0.20070326.0245">
    <requirements>
    <feature download-size="73000" id="com.ibm.productivity.tools.feature" match="perfect" size="228117" shared="false" url="${installer.root}/updateSite" version="3.0.0.20070323-1638"/>
    <feature download-size="965" id="com.ibm.productivity.tools.standalone.feature" match="perfect" size="1694" shared="false" url="${installer.root}/updateSite" version="3.0.0.20070323-1638"/>
    <feature download-size="232" id="com.ibm.productivity.tools.notes.branding.feature" match="perfect" size="734" shared="false" url="${installer.root}/updateSite" version="3.0.0.20070323-1638"/>
    </requirements>
    </installfeature>

2. Install Notes 8 with full features as a Windows administrator. The menu items and desktop shortcut for the Productivity Tools are created correctly..

3. Log in as the administrator or standard user and try to launch Notes by double-clicking the shortcut on the desktop. This is when Notes crashes.
