Error: 'IBM productivity tools do not support this file format' upon opening MS PowerPoint .PPS file using Lotus Presentations

Technote (FAQ)

Question

You attempt to open a Microsoft® PowerPoint file created with the .pps file extension using Lotus® Presentations productivity tool in Lotus® Notes® 8 client, and you receive the error:

"IBM® productivity tools do not support this file format."

Cause

Lotus Presentations does not recognize the .pps file extension as a PowerPoint file. "PPS" is the file extension that corresponds to MS PowerPoint Show, the simple presentation viewer that allows one to view (not edit) PowerPoint presentation files.

Answer

To work around this issue, rename the .pps file extension to .ppt. This name change allows Lotus Presentations to recognize the file type correctly and to access the file.

This issue has been reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# DLYN75AC97, and this functionality is under consideration for a future release.

**Note**:

"PPS" stands for PowerPoint Show

"PPT" stands for PowerPoint Presentation
