Considerations when installing Rational ClearCase, ClearQuest, and RequisitePro on Windows with Installation Manager 64-bit

Question & Answer

Question

What are the considerations, known issues, and limitations when installing IBM Rational ClearCase, IBM Rational ClearQuest, and IBM Rational RequisitePro with the 64-bit version of IBM Installation Manager?

Cause

Starting with Rational ClearCase and ClearQuest versions 7.1.2.10 and 8.0.0.6 and RequisitePro versions 7.1.2.10 and 7.1.3.6, Installation Manager version 1.6.2 or later is required for installing and upgrading the products. Installation Manger v1.6.2 has two versions, a 32-bit and 64-bit version. You can use either version to install the products. To avoid problems, review the considerations, known issues, and limitations.

Answer

In most cases, you can use the 32-bit version of Installation Manager to install Rational ClearCase, ClearQuest, and RequisitiePro because these products are all 32-bit products. However, some scenarios require you to install using Installation Manager 64-bit.

Scenario 1
ClearCase, ClearQuest, and RequisitePro integrates with another Rational product such as IBM Rational Application Developer (RAD) that is installed and managed with Installation Manager 64-bit.

Scenario 2
The system where you are installing has Rational products installed and managed with Installation Manager 64-bit.

Scenario 3
On a system that hosts multiple IBM products, you want to upgrade at least one of the products to a 64-bit version which requires installing with Installation Manager 64-bit. In this case, all products on the system must be installed using Installation Manager 64-bit.

For additional information about installing with Installation Manager 64-bit, review these sections:

Considerations when installing with Installation Manager 64-bit

  • When you install Rational products on the same system, all products in the same package group must be installed with an Installation Manager version that has the same bit-mode. During installation planning, select the Installation Manager version with a bit-mode supported by all products you plan to install. For example, If you plan to install a product with Installation Manager 64-bit, make sure all other product you want to install support installing with Installation Manager 64-bit.

    Launchpad installations
If Installation Manager is not installed on your system, and you use Launchpad to install ClearCase, ClearQuest, and RequisitiePro, Launchpad installs Installation Manager 32-bit by default. If you have a requirement to install with Installation Manager 64-bit, download and install it before starting the Launchpad installation process. See Installation Manager 1.6 downloads.

Limitations

  • Do not use Installation Manager 64-bit to install server components deployed using WebSphere Application Server, version 8.0.0.5 or earlier.
WebSphere Application Server version 8.0.0.5 or earlier does not support installing with Installation Manager 64-bit. If ClearCase, ClearQuest, and RequisitePro server components are deployed in WebSphere Application Server version 8.0.0.5 or earlier, do not use Installation Manager 64-bit to install the Rational products.

If your environment uses WebSphere Applications Server, 7.x, you can install ClearCase, ClearQuest, and RequisitePro server components using Installation Manager 64-bit. Because WebSphere Application Server 7.x installation is a script-based installation, it does not have any Installation Manager dependencies.

If your environment uses WebSphere Applications Server 8.0.0.6 or later, you can install ClearCase, ClearQuest, and RequisitePro server components using Installation Manager 64-bit because WebSphere Application Server version 8.0.0.6 (and later) support installation with Installation Manager 64-bit.

    Rational license management
If you install Rational ClearCase, ClearQuest, or RequisitePro using Installation Manager 64-bit, you cannot install the Rational License Server and Rational License Key Administrator, version 8.1.3 and earlier on the same system. See troubleshooting technote Rational License Key Server and Rational License Key Administrator installation with 64-bit Installation Manager.

You cannot use Installation Manager 64-bit to install ClearCase, ClearQuest, versions earlier than 8.0.0.6 and 7.1.2.10 or RequisitePro versions earlier than 7.1.2.10 and 7.1.3.6.
If you use Installation Manager 64-bit to install a ClearCase, ClearQuest, or RequisitePro version that does not support 64-bit installation, the installation fails with the following error message:
    C:\Users\IBM_AD˜1\AppData\Local\Temp\lib5593374086656469756.dll (C:\Users\IBM_AD˜1\AppData\Local\Temp\lib5593374086656469756.dll is not a valid Win32 application. )

Known Issues

  • When you install ClearCase 8.0.0.6 with Installation Manager 64-bit, this warning message displays on the Installation Manager Install Packages page:

The following packages do not support the 64-bit version of Installation Manager that you are using: IBM® Rational® ClearCase® - Windows version 8.0.0.06. If you continue you might have issues with installation and deployment.

You can ignore this warning and continue with the installation.
  • If you try to install ClearCase, ClearQuest, or RequisitePro with Installation Manager 64-bit on a product version that does not support 64-bit installation, the installation fails with the following error:

  • If you are upgrading from ClearCase or ClearQuest 7.0.x or earlier, you must uninstall the previous version of the product before installing. If you use Installation Manager 32-bit, the installation is blocked if the previous version of the product is still installed. With Installation Manager 64-bit, you can install version 8.0.0.6 or later without uninstalling the 7.0.x version, but the product will not work correctly after installation.

Determining which version of the Installation Manager is installed

  1. Start Installation Manager.
  2. From the menu bar, click Help > About.
  3. On the About Installation Manager dialog, click Installation Details.
  4. On the Configuration tab, check the -arch setting:
      • Installation Manager 32-bit:: -arch x86
      • Installation Manager 64-bit: -arch x86_64

Changing the Installation Manager version for installing and managing products
Complete these steps if you need to change the Installation Manager version for installing, from a 32-bit version to a 64-bit version for example:

  1. Uninstall any IBM products on the system that have been installed and managed by using Installation Manager.
  2. Uninstall Installation Manager.
  3. Install the required version of Installation Manager.
  4. Reinstall the IBM products.
