About IBM’s Forbidden City
The Forbidden City: Beyond Space and Time (more information), is a breathtaking virtual-world that brings to life the legendary Chinese Forbidden City for today’s virtual traveller, enabling them to explore a three-dimensional replica of the palace grounds. For over three years, designers from IBM have worked closely with curators from the Palace Museum to re-create the Forbidden City in the virtual world.
SOA Overview. Architectures for Virtual Worlds and Beyond
Launched in 2008, the Virtual Forbiddden City is built on using service oriented architecture (SOA) principles and IBM technology. At the heart of this remarkable project is a multimedia solution that allows the sharing of rich content with millions of users.
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a business-centric IT architectural approach that supports integrating your business as linked, repeatable business tasks, or services.
About IBM & Virtual Worlds
Virtual worlds are attracting a great deal of media attention and human interest. But what do they hold for the future of business and society? IBM believes that virtual worlds are quickly becoming a powerful tool and a driving force to what many are calling the 3D Internet and hold promise for new or transformed applications that impact business and society, many of which have yet to be imagined.
IBM has been exploring and experimenting with the application of virtual world business models and technologies in areas such as collaboration, education, training & events, commerce and process management and rehearsal.
IBM is helping clients and partners to conduct business inside virtual worlds and to connect the virtual world with the real world through this rich, immersive environment. We are working with innovative companies across a number of industries to help them understand how their business can benefit from the use of virtual environments.
