Lower administrative costs and headaches through simplified management
The scalability improvements in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6, enabled by the integration of DB2 as the internal database, allows customers manage more data with fewer servers than in previous versions. Tivoli Storage Manager servers can now be added at a much slower rate as your data grows, reducing both infrastructure and administrative costs.
Database administration is also simplified in Tivoli Storage Manager 6 through the exploitation of DB2’s autonomic computing concepts, including a self-tuning database buffer pool. DB2 is completely contained within Tivoli Storage Manager – no DB2 administrator skills are needed.
Data integrity is greatly improved through run-time data validity checks that verify backup data as it is being written. Errors are immediately detected and corrected.
New online database reorganization capabilities enable changes and tuning of the database while the system remains operational. The Tivoli Storage Manager 6 server does not need to be taken "offline" for database repair actions, which improves system availability. Competitive offerings require the servers to be off-line to preserve the integrity of their distributed catalogs and index files.
Re-Designed Reporting and Monitoring
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6 comes with a wide range of new, pre-configured, ‘out-of-the-box’ reports that are fully-customizable; and near real-time monitoring via a customizable dashboard.
These features are included with no additional licensing, and enhance the administration experience of multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers in large environments with less impact to the managed servers.
With the new reporting monitoring capabilities, you can gain visibility into your data protection environment on client and server activities, errors, database status, device and tape resource usage, throughput, capacity analysis and projections, details on backup and archive jobs, and historical trending reports.

IBM Tivoli Storage Manager 6 leverages many proven IBM reporting and monitoring technologies:
IBM Tivoli Monitoring, including IBM Tivoli Enterprise Portal, IBM Tivoli Enterprise Management Server and Tivoli Data Warehouse
Tivoli Common Reporting, which uses Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools (BIRT) to create custom reports
IBM DB2 to store historical data obtained from Tivoli Storage Manager servers that are monitored using IBM Tivoli Monitoring.
