Features, advantages and benefits
| Features | Advantages | Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Automated critical data identification | Automates the task of identifying critical input and output files and creates a critical file list that can be used almost immediately to create a synchronized application backup or used for identifying data for remote backup or mirroring | Faster, more accurate backups and mirroring increases system operator's productivity |
| ABARS manager | Uses a single data mover and intelligent automated features to create synchronized application backups for both local and offsite recovery and allows for recovery by criticality at the recovery site | Helps get most critical applications up first reducing downtime for end-users after an outage |
| Critical backup tracking and inventory | Tracks and inventories backups and provides visibility to all backups as well as what is backed up and what is not | Allows system operators to determine quickly if backup processes have captured required data needed for a successful recovery |
Business benefits
Tivoli Advanced Backup and Recovery for z/OS offers functionality, flexibility and choice to automate manual, time consuming tasks by identifying critical data assets, automate the backup of those assets and provide a centralized inventory of all backups including Advanced Catalog Management backups. These features enable customer environments to quickly recover from local, unplanned outages or recover their entire z/OS environment offsite while saving crucial time and money.
Functionality provided includes the following:
Automated Critical Data Identification - This function automates the task of identifying "critical" input and output data assets. Using information from an array of sources, such as job schedulers, JCL, and SMF records, a list of the critical data assets used by the application is automatically constructed each time the application executes. The critical file list can be used immediately to create a synchronized application backup. The list is also an important analysis tool for application developers including identifying application data for replication or remote mirroring.
ABARS Manager simplifies the process of backing up data from disk, tape, and DFSMShsm migration without recall by using a single data mover and intelligent automated features to provide a backup and recovery system for critical application data. It provides powerful extensions to the Aggregate Backup and Recovery Support (ABARS) facility of DFSMShsm. Using ABARS Manager you can create synchronized application backups for both local and offsite recovery and recover applications by criticality at the recovery site.
Critical Backup Tracking/Inventory - This solution tracks and inventories backups taken in a z/OS environment including ABARS Manager and Advanced Catalog Management backups without JCL changes. It tracks and manages DFSMSdss™, Innovation’s FDR, Innovation’s FDR/ABR, IDCAMS, DFSMShsm™ Incremental and AUTODUMP. In addition, it tracks backups taken by applications during their batch processing with utilities such as IEBGENER, IEBCOPY and DFSORT. The inventory provides visibility to all backups in the environment. Reporting provides proof that critical data has a backup and identifies what is not backed up in your environment.
