Platform enhancements and more keep you on path of continuous improvement with IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.1 from CCR2, Issue 9 - 2006

Heath Newburn, IBM Tivoli Monitoring product manager, was interviewed for this CCR2 product update. |
Platform enhancements, dynamic linking, new event management capabilities and a growing catalog of OPAL add-ons – these are the latest additions to IBM Tivoli Monitoring 6.1. Fix Pack 3 is available now to keep you current with these new features.
The IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM) team is on a mission of continuous improvement. Enhancements since the release of Tivoli Monitoring 6.1 in Fall 2005 include Fix Packs 1 and 2 (CCR2: Extend scalability of IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.1 for your large enterprise environment) , a growing list of solutions for Tivoli Monitoring in the IBM Tivoli Open Process Automation Library (OPAL) catalog, and ITM 6.1 Fix Pack 3, which was released in August. "We're not making you wait 18 months to get additional functionality; instead, we are constantly enabling new features," says Heath Newburn, product manager for ITM.
In addition to more than 100 APAR fixes, ITM 6.1 Fix Pack 3 delivers significant new features, including support for additional platforms, Dynamic Workspace Linking, an Event Assistant for trouble-ticket activities, and command line management for your Managed System Lists (MSL).
Platform improvements support AIX and Oracle Warehouse. To complete the AIX stack, ITM 6.1 Fix Pack 3 provides support for Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server (TEPS) and Warehouse proxy agent (WPA) on AIX. In addition, a Linux TEPS can now communicate with an Oracle warehouse, and Oracle-based warehouses are now supported on a wide variety of platforms beyond Solaris, including Windows, AIX and Linux.
IBM is adding Dynamic Workspace Linking to the latest releases of its Tivoli Monitoring, IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON and other Tivoli Enterprise Portal (TEP)-based solutions. An extension of link editor capabilities, this feature greatly simplifies linking by enabling you to easily create links between workspaces within and between Tivoli products.
For example, Dynamic Workspace Linking from a Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC) event can take you directly to the corresponding situation results workspace with the click of a mouse button, so you can more quickly uncover the source of a problem and take corrective action. Used together with other TEP solutions, such as IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager (ITCAM) for Response Time Tracking, the feature enables you to quickly switch between application response time and underlying physical server statistics, for example.
Another workspace-related enhancement in ITM 6.1 Fix Pack 3 is an Import/Export Workspaces and Views option, which allows to you conveniently migrate your workspace and views from test to production environments.
This interim release also enables you to create and manage your MSLs via the command line, and adds trouble-ticket capabilities. The Event Assistant in the situation event console offers new menu capabilities that can enhance your ability to use Tivoli Monitoring for event and trouble ticket management. To an event you can attach a file, such as a log history or screen snapshot, and note history that shows who has been involved in solving the problem; you can also assign an owner and more.
