The IBM Tivoli Netcool/Precision for Telecommunications Networks 5.4 Fundamentals course is designed for the system administrator responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining the Netcool/Precision Telecommunications Networks product.

The course provides an understanding of the key product processes, including the integration with the IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus product. After covering a basic overview of product components and their associated functionality, students install and configure the Netcool/Precision TN product. The latter half of the course demonstrates how to modify default discovery characteristics and customize the Network Pilot for reporting and topology viewing.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, each student gains an understanding of the advanced administration and configuration options available within Netcool/Precision TN. Practical experience is gained throughout the course. Students learn:

  • How to Install Netcool/Precision, including licensing.
  • That Netcool/Precision TN integrates and sends alerts to the Netcool OMNIbus ObjectServer.
  • How to use Network Pilot.
  • How to discover a network.
  • How to use visualization to view discovered devices and view associated alarms.
  • Further advanced features.

Who will benefit from this course

Pre-sales engineers, system integrators, value added resellers (VARs) and system administrators of Netcool/Precision TN, who will be required to install, configure and maintain Netcool/Precision TN.

Required skills/knowledge

Students must have a system administrator level understanding of UNIX and the Unix Editor, including knowledge of network management. Each candidate must have a practical understanding of UNIX at system administration level with the ability to:

  1. Understand network management, including SNMP and TCP/IP, routing, switching and network management systems.
  2. Determine the cause of a software problem, and create a work around or fix the problem
  3. Work with basic scripting techniques
  4. Understand basic telecommunications networking, such as DWDM, SONET/SDH, ATM, and DSL

Attendance of the IBM Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus Administration and Configuration course is mandatory.
