Case Study

The PCMS Group is a leading provider of integrated software, services and hardware systems to the retail and food service sectors. Founded in 1982, PCMS has grown from a UK-based family business to an international corporation with operations in North and South America, Europe, Australia and South Africa.

PCMS offers a comprehensive suite of software products to address the full spectrum of needs across multiple retail sectors. At the core of this portfolio is the VISION BeanStore solution, a best of breed Point of Sale (PoS) system that has been adopted by more than 127 retailers, covering in excess of 187,000 tills in more than 32,000 stores across 43 countries.

Keeping up with changing consumer needs
PCMS originally launched BeanStore more than 10 years ago and works continuously to upgrade and enhance the software to keep pace with the changing demands of businesses and consumers.

Richard Goodall, Group Sales and Marketing Director of the PCMS Group, explains: “It is really a non-stop challenge for retailers to maintain a strategic edge in today’s marketplace. Competition from online-only retail continues to grow and consumers now have more choices and channels for purchasing goods than ever before. As the centre of power shifts more and more towards the consumer, traditional retailers must work harder to make the shopping experience faster, better and cheaper for customers if they are to remain profitable.”

To help its retail clients stay on top of this competitive market and deliver an ever better service to consumers, PCMS needs to deliver versatile PoS systems that are capable of growing and evolving in tandem with retailers.

Richard Goodall states: “While the need for PoS systems has been around for many years, technology is now changing at an incredibly rapid pace, which requires much more agility from retailers. As a solution provider, this means that we need to base our products on a flexible, open architecture that allows clients to quickly and easily adapt to new forms of payment and interaction, such as mobile commerce and ‘click and collect’ services.”

Fully flexible solution
PCMS has developed its VISION BeanStore solutions with these requirements in mind: the platform-independent applications work across multiple trading platforms, giving clients freedom of choice when it comes to selecting associated operating systems, databases and hardware. BeanStore is also designed to run in multiple configurations – from a single tier PoS solution to a fully integrated system with back office and central management capabilities. It also offers simple integration with other retail applications.

To enhance the openness and scalability of its BeanStore software suite, PCMS uses IBM WebSphere software as a platform for remote software deployment and management. Richard Goodall remarks: “Our solutions are designed to be extremely flexible and forgiving and we use IBM technology to help get the very best out of all our applications.”

Fast, easy application development with IBM WebSphere
VISION BeanStore integrates IBM WebSphere Remote Server software to provide a reliable, scalable foundation for remotely managing different enterprise technologies. The solution features IBM Retail Store Server software – a leading service-oriented architecture (SOA) platform that delivers reliable operations and centralised management of enterprise technologies across networks of dozens, hundreds or even thousands of locations and devices.

“With IBM WebSphere Remote Server, we can quickly develop and deploy new functionalities that enhance the BeanStore solution,” says Richard Goodall. “The software allows us to respond rapidly to changing requirements and build the applications our clients need to effectively seize new opportunities, such as extending PoS capabilities to mobile devices. IBM WebSphere software really is the best at what it does and gives us the agility we need to meet clients’ high expectations.”

The IBM Retail Store Server software combines IBM WebSphere Application Server, IBM WebSphere MQ messaging and IBM DB2® database capabilities in a single product, providing a total platform for building, deploying and managing new technologies. The software comes pre-integrated and pre-tested, with embedded licensing helping to keep costs low.

Supporting future growth
By underpinning its leading BeanStore solution with flexible IBM software, PCMS is able to support its retail clients with a comprehensive PoS system that has a strong roadmap, helping them to make the most of market opportunities both now and in the future.

Richard Goodall concludes: “Selecting a PoS system is a major undertaking for any retailer and a key strategic investment. By choosing VISION BeanStore, retailers gain a platform that helps to drive the business through today’s market pressures and that has the longevity to support a company’s needs many years down the line.

“Basing our PoS solution on IBM software gives us the ability to keep up with the relentless pace of market change and technological innovation and continue to refine our applications to best meet customer needs. With BeanStore in place, retailers can be confident that they have an enduring platform that will be fully supported, no matter what challenges or changes the future may hold.”
