Case Study

Wissenschaftliches Institut der AOK (WIdO) is the research institute of AOK, Germany’s largest statutory health insurance fund. Founded in 1976, the institute conducts research and development work, helping AOK deliver high-quality, cost-effective healthcare. WIdO focuses on the following seven areas of research and analysis: ambulatory analysis and care, pharmaceuticals, drug information systems and analysis, medical care, workplace health promotion, health policy and health systems analysis, integrated analysis and hospitals.

The Opportunity
As part of a health insurance fund in Germany, WIdO is tasked with collecting and analyzing clinical data from millions of patients, 2,000 hospitals, 140,000 mobile medics and 20,000 pharmacies. Its studies are designed to help the insurance fund serve members effectively and keep costs low. But they also require extensive analytical processing power. Without it, the research institute was limited to running small-scale studies that lacked the necessary scope and depth.

What Makes It Smarter
As healthcare costs rise, insurance providers must work to reduce inefficiencies, from hospitals and pharmacies to billing offices and patient workplaces. WIdO uses an advanced business analytics platform to understand healthcare trends across the country, including when and why people get sick, which treatment pathways work best, which medications are prescribed, how illness affects productivity and more. The powerful analysis solution, capable of processing 24 million records in less than a minute, enables the research institute to run broad multidisciplinary studies that extract important insights from large amounts of healthcare data. For example, analysis showed that children under age 5 were more than twice as likely to receive a prescription for antibiotics as older children. What’s more, almost half of those prescriptions were for reserve antibiotics — which should be used only when a patient develops a resistance to primary treatments. These findings exposed a knowledge gap in clinical practices, which drives up costs and affects quality of care. This insight paved the way for doctor awareness programs designed to reduce excessive use of antibiotics.

Real Business Results
· Shortened analysis times from more than two hours to just a few seconds — an improvement of more than 99 percent
· Enabled the processing of more complex analytical tasks, from formally defined analysis applications to ad hoc queries
· Expanded the institute’s reach in multidisciplinary, geographically broad studies, allowing it to analyze much larger data volumes
