ZSL cuts development costs by 60 percent

IBM Worklight software simplifies development and maintenance for multiple mobile platforms

Published on 04-Mar-2013

"Almost 60 percent of development costs are cut when we develop for multiple platforms using Worklight. To develop a mobile application for four different devices, we may need 400 hours, whereas using Worklight, we only need about 100 to 150 hours." - Yuvaraja Manickam, head of IDEA Lab, research and development (R&D) division, ZSL

Case Study

Zylog Systems Limited (ZSL) is a global systems integrator and solution provider headquartered in Edison, New Jersey. The company offers onshore, offshore and near-shore technology solutions and services to companies around the world. It has more than 4,500 employees working in 12 countries. To best serve its customers, ZSL focuses on newer technologies entering the marketplace, such as cross-platform applications and native-based applications for mobile devices.

Challenge
ZSL was developing two new mobile solutions for smartphones, tablets or other mobile devices. The first, Bank.Companion, is a mobile banking solution that enables banks to provide personalized services to customers. The second solution, ePhoenix Mobile Insurance, allows insurance agents to access key insurance applications for activities such as underwriting, claims and accounting. In the past, ZSL maintained multiple code bases for various mobile platforms, such as iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile. However, developing and maintaining so many different code bases became increasingly difficult. Adding to this challenge was the fact that ZSL also made customer-specific customizations. The company began looking for a mobile application development tool that would enable it to port its existing mobile applications to a single code base.

Solution
After evaluating numerous solutions, ZSL implemented IBM Worklight software. Using the Worklight solution, ZSL can use a single code base to support multiple mobile platforms, making it easier to develop and upgrade its mobile banking and insurance applications. “Almost 60 percent of development costs are cut when we develop for multiple platforms using Worklight,” says Yuvaraja Manickam, head of IDEA Lab, research and development (R&D) division at ZSL. “To develop a mobile application for four different devices, we may need 400 hours, whereas using Worklight, we only need about 100 to 150 hours.”

Worklight software provides security features that are especially important for the organization’s banking customers, such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) 128 - bit encrypted connectivity. “Worklight is securing the processes, the data, the transactions, along with the connectivity with the devices and the connectivity with the back-end system,” says Manickam. “So it’s a complete package.”

In addition, Worklight software provides a single administrative portal for multiple device platforms, so an administrator can easily push out notifications or upgrades to users. Administrators can also use the portal to access consolidated reports on the mobile applications that include all the supported devices and platforms. In the past, ZSL had to create reports for each platform and combine them manually. Now, the company can see at a glance which devices users employ and how many users are connected to each application.

Benefits
· Cuts development costs by 60 percent
· Simplifies application maintenance and upgrades
· Provides consolidated reports for all the supported devices and platforms, giving greater insight
