Virtualization and consolidation speed time to market and save costs

Sogeti is seeing a trend as its consulting customers across all industries seek more agility and flexibility to provide additional services and speed time to market despite flat or declining operating budgets. Many data centers inhibit this vision because they have multiple infrastructure layers that are difficult to maintain. To reduce costs and improve time to market, customers must virtualize and consolidate resources.

Sogeti experienced concerns similar to its customers and, as a consulting company, it wanted to address its internal concerns as well as help its customers streamline their infrastructure. The company’s five complex and fragmented server environments were difficult to maintain and evolve. A more flexible infrastructure would mean that Sogeti could more quickly implement projects for its customers. In addition, a consolidated, cloud-enabled solution with a single point of management would help reduce costs and accelerate deployment. Philippe Duranté, IBM strategic alliance vice president for Sogeti says, “Time to market for us is time to market for our customers.”

To better serve its customers and oversee its consulting business, Sogeti needed a security-rich infrastructure that could provide up to 800 virtual machines and 50 TB of storage. Because Sogeti found it very difficult to predict its future demand and capacity needs, the organization also wanted a highly scalable infrastructure.

Sogeti wanted its business units to focus solely on their core competencies and consulting services, not on IT maintenance. This would allow the organization to gain a competitive edge because it could be more innovative and offer faster delivery to its customers.

IBM PureFlex System technology offers integration and cloud capabilities

After considering numerous vendors, Sogeti chose IBM, implementing a cloud-based IBM PureFlex System Express Edition solution, with 15 IBM Flex System x240 Compute Nodes. Sogeti was impressed with the embedded Flex System Manager console, a single point of management control module that allows the organization to administer its virtual machines and allocate costs to different projects, business units and customers. The module also improves flexibility and automation in the PureFlex server environment.

Sogeti was attracted to the PureFlex System technology’s ability to offer integrated expertise, cloud computing and a consolidated infrastructure. The company believes many of its customers will use PureFlex System technology for building and implementing their cloud.

Further, PureFlex System technology meets the company’s major requirements of integration, security, reliability and performance. With IBM Flex System Manager technology, the solution is flexible, efficient and simple to manage. Finally, PureFlex System technology is scalable; the company chose a network line of 10 GB, which can easily upgrade to 40 GB.

Centralized infrastructure accelerates business and reduces costs

With the PureFlex System solution, Sogeti now has a centralized and streamlined infrastructure, helping enable the organization to better manage its customers’ projects. Without increasing its staff, the company can accommodate at least 1,200 virtual machines, a 60 percent capacity increase, allowing Sogeti to consolidate its five infrastructures to just one. Automation and integration reduce maintenance costs and complexity and accelerate business workloads, helping the company to boost productivity and deliver services to customers faster.

Sogeti expects to reduce the time needed to virtualize systems to several minutes, which helps speed time to market. With a private cloud system, decreased costs and simplified management, Sogeti can accommodate its future needs, and it anticipates servicing more business from its internal sites and infrastructure.

Because Sogeti faced many of the same challenges as its customers, the company is able to use its knowledge about PureSystems offerings to help customers find solutions to their issues. Duranté says: “For customers who need to consolidate their infrastructure, have better performance and faster time to market, I recommend the expert integrated systems of PureFlex. This solution is flexible, and the infrastructure is easy to maintain.”

The IBM solution allows Sogeti to reduce expenses while increasing flexibility and performance. Nicolas Saint Remy, chief information officer for Sogeti explains, “IBM PureFlex is a single box that integrates hardware, networking, software and storage. It’s quite simple, so we don’t need a lot of manpower. The flexibility and performance allow us to reduce operations costs and focus on innovation, which is one of our CIO’s major issues.”

IBM Global Financing provided a compelling financing offer that combined the components of the PureFlex solution into convenient periodic payments. The flexible payment terms allowed Sogeti to avoid the up-front investment cost for the PureFlex system and better manage its cash flow. Sogeti took advantage of an IBM Global Financing fair market value lease to further drive down the acquisition cost.
